I am skeptical about it making sense in the way that society was wrong for it then, and many women were forced into a life that they did not want because of it.

Many wealthy and famous people marry young people (sometimes alarming young as your examples). I am not sure that is a good defense. If anything it is an argument for a firm 18 requirement because people who have the means can find a way to influence a marriage (especially if the parents want the marriage).

This is from 'brides.com'. "In the U.S., while the divorce rate hovers around 40 or 50 percent, the divorce rate for arranged marriages is 4 percent. In India, where some estimate that 90 percent of marriages are arranged, the divorce rate is only 1 percent."

People do a very poor job of choosing their own mate. The Hollywood version of love that many believe in is the same as anything else that Hollywood creates, is just smoke and mirrors and seldom attainable. We would likely have more successful marriages if most were married off in their early teens. A happy marriage takes hard work and give and take by both sides, something few people want to do in todays polarized world.

There's a pretty harsh old custom of brothers killing their sister, or the father does it, if a woman disgraces the family by not marrying the right person, or infidelity.

The rate could be low, but you know, one girl gets killed, it will keep another 99 who hear about it in line.

You seem to have no problem killing somebodies business if you don't agree with them. How many people that lose their business and life savings commit suicide.

It still happens in much of the world routinely. Search "Honor Killings".

You do not quite get it. Marriage was one of 2-3 choices. Marriage. Prostitution. Join a convent. Perhaps be a spinster schoolteacher.

Most men got to do backbreaking labor until the day they died.

That was how it was.

Women got a few choices. Marry off. Be a prostitute. Join a convent. Maybe be a spinster schoolteacher.

Men got to do backbreaking labor until the day they died.

This is what it was. You are spoiled with life today as it is.

Being Gay is a very much a youth worshipping cult. The biggest sin you can do as a Gay man is to get old. Nobody will want you, especially the young ones. They are really the only ones that count.

Hahaha, this is funny how wrong it is.

I live in a college town full of young gay college boys. You have NO IDEA how many of them are into “daddies.”

In the old days men had a good reason for marrying young women, childbirth. The number one killer of women before 1900 was childbirth. Some men were constantly losing wives and they replaced them with the youngest new wife possible because there was a good chance she could live through childbirth. It was not unusual for wealthy man of 50 to marry a 16 year old girl. He was not a molester or a pervert, he just wanted heirs.

Hahaha, you have no idea how out of touch with reality you are. What are you, early thirties? You have no idea what's coming.

Yep, early thirties. I just banged a 21 year old frat jock earlier this week. It was hot AF. (TMI? Too bad - it’s The Gay Thread).

I’ll think I’ll trust my personal experiences over some boomer’s fake anecdotes about what some gay guys told him back in like the 1950s.
