aceofspades Member since: Oct 24, 2012 Threads: 83 Posts: 2019 | Interesting development: Over the holiday weekend, I saw an ad on Facebook looking for a divorce attorney with minimum starting salary at $160K Even though I am engaged in rebuilding my own practice, I submitted my resumé to the firm as I want to keep my options open This morning, I received a call from a woman saying she was from "X Firm" They asked me to come in for an interview this week, which I scheduled However, when she gave me the address, it did not match the address of the firm that placed the Facebook ad I Google'd the address and it was a residence in Brooklyn Upon further research, I found out that the "firm" associated with that address is a discount firm specializing in traffic tickets and the entire website was written in Russian (I had to use Google translate) Should I even bother with this interview? If I do go, please avenge my death by the Russian mob when it happens |

Lots of Russians in Brooklyn. We had a branch there where "for English" was option 3 or 4. We had 2 Russians who did huge business. Bad business, but huge. That the website is in Russian is not a red flag in and of itself in that Boro. That it is a residence might or might not be, Brooklyn has lots of places with storefronts below and residences above. If you time is free why not? I used to work with a guy went on all the scam job ads you saw in the paper in the 1990s ("ROCK AND ROLL ATMOSPHERE........" His logic was: 1. It gets you out of the house 2. There is a small chance it is legit 3. It lets you hone your interview skills 4. You might see a business nearby you are interested in. The President is a fink. |

I thought the salary was set. No benefits, no insurance, a kid answers the phone? It's a scam of some kind, I would avoid it entirely. There won't be a salary, it will be case to case and you get paid when they get paid for whatever barely legal work they make you do. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

It won't be full time. It will be under $100K. Zero benefits of any kind. It will be a job one step above or below ambulance chaser. There is a glut of lawyers in the US. So many that law school grads are suing their law schools for promises not kept. These Russkies will find a lawyer to work for peanuts, part time, and do whatever shady crap they ask. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

They already responded that my salary request was beyond their budget and asked if I was "willing to negotiate" I replied asking them the salary they wanted to pay |
