So, I have nothing against Jews but the new bookkeeper in the office is Jewish, wears a yarmulke and gets to leave at 1pm every Friday in order to be home by sundown - he lives about 35 minutes by subway from the office - in the summer, the sun sets between 8 and 8:45pm in NY - why does he get to leave at 1pm on Fridays in the summer?

Because you work in an office where
insanity seems to be the general rule?
Just a guess..

Because he is smarter than you and negotiated it when he was hired? Only answer I can think of.....

Noooooooooo - if I was Jewish and stated I needed to be home by sundown or couldn't turn a light switch on on a Friday after sundown, I would be kowtowed to as well

(not singling out Judaism - insert your favorite Christian or Muslim holiday)

Got to love how some staff are more equal than others

I also negotiated a "work from home one day per week" schedule and it was taken away from me -- imagine him trying to interfere with someone's "faith" -- there would be a civil rights lawsuit

Verbally, which was meaningless. As
you found out.

All I know of lawyers is from
TV shows. They always complain
about hours, constantly. 60 and
80 and 100 hours a week and
being on call 24/7.

There are levels of lawyers. The top ones get into law firms. The rest work shoulder to shoulder with us commoners, well below what a degree is needed for.

What you do not see on TV is law is a lead-driven business, just like vinyl sing or replacement windows. Few people need a lawyer for more than small stuff. Wills, deeds, etc. Criminal law is nothing like on TV. DUIs are a big business. Competition is fierce. A few clients are good people that just had a bad night. The rest are multiple offenders who might show up for court loaded. Or criminal law where chances are you are defending a guilty party. Then you have to hope these people pay.

Law schools have been closing, so word might be getting out that it is not TV.

This was predicted 10 years ago.
There was a glut of lawyers and
more on the way and no jobs for
them. My nephew got a law degree,
found no job, married an engineer
and is now a stay at home dad.

A law-school boom started when "LA Law" was big. I like shows and movies that show what new lawyer is really like. Working out of the back of a nail salon chasing any kind of case you can find might be extreme, but not so far off. In fact, Jimmy hustling for the elder-law clients was probably one of the most real portrayals of a lawyer in TV of movies of all time. His gf getting all that business from a regional bank, no way that would ever happen.

Guy I worked the courthouse with summed it up. Said if you are not going to a top-10 law school, fuhgeddabaddit. The good jobs go to those students. Big law firms do not recruit below there. ROI on your law degree gets very low below there.
