WHAT out of state competition?

Could Tanko be talking about Foxwoods and Newport Grand (both opened in 1992), or Mohegan Sun (1996)? Perhaps they drew enough of the NYC-CT crowd away from AC to merit mention.

The first bankruptcy was initiated in 1991, before any of those opened. They may well have drawn enough to merit mention.

Although, the revenue reports:

https://gaming.unlv.edu/abstract/ac_main.html

Would indicate that all revenue did for the city's casinos was go up every single year in the 1990's, with or without the competition. In fact, 2006-2007 was the first time that annual revenue for the city dropped compared to the prior year.

EDIT: 2001 also declined compared to 2000, missed that, but it wasn't by much.

2006-2007 was an interesting time, because more casinos opened around this time including in nearby states Borgata opened in 2003 which ate a lot of business from the more old school casinos with its popularity. It was also the peak of casinos in AC fighting for business between each other. Also, a city level smoking ban in all casinos (I think 2007, maybe 2008), which all culminated in it becoming less popular with many casinos. The smoking ban was reversed (partially, it is now 25% of casino floors can be smoking, though the governor banned smoking in casinos by executive order due to COVID, so it is uncertain the future of AC smoking when things normalize). But, anyway, the point is that was an interesting time period for AC and the start of the decline.

It seems like 10 AC Casinos is a reasonable number that is sustainable. Whenever it goes above 10, it usually does not last....
Either that or allow for smaller casinos to be opened (right now there is a zoned minimum size requirement and they also must be attached to a hotel that has a minimum number of rooms, I forget the numbers, but it essentially means each casino has to be quite large compared to many states where there can be smaller casinos and/or not have a hotel at all).

Anyway, I realize I derailed a little bit going on about AC, sorry.

No need to apologize, all good thoughts, I'll likely respond to your post in the other thread a bit later on.

The mid-2000's range is right around the time that the competition from other states became meaningful enough to REALLY matter. While Atlantic City is a destination town for casinos, it's important to keep in mind that the regional casino market is quite sizable. You're obviously going to pull a ton of, "Regulars," from Philadelphia...oh crap...Philadelphia has casinos now. I guess Harrah's Chester was the first in 2007 with the others coming within the next few years. Grantville might have pulled a bit starting in 2008, nice property. Tough spot for Harrah's because they're just trying to hang on to revenue share with their AC selves.

The troubles for the Trump casinos started well before any of this, of course. Started before those casinos even opened, with the high interest on the debt. Needed basically a miracle, didn't get it, that's just business.

I just don't see the need for a revisionist narrative on it because the actual narrative isn't particularly bad, imo.

I love her!

She reminds me of Miley Cyrus! She has NO FEAR! Will say or do what she wants because... SHE WANTS TO! I hate her politics more than I can state.... but I do love her fearlessness.....

As far as the Robinhood criminal enterprise.... There will be near unanimous support to GET THEM! Imagine how clear it must be if AOC, TC, and I agree!

The blind dog found a bone! These brokers are 100% in the wrong blocking purchases if funds are in place to do so.
