I like the statue of Lincoln talking to some guy in a sweater, I think helping him directions, in Chicago. My hotel there recently was quite close to it. Yet, I'm still not sure of the point of Lincoln talking to a present-day tourist. I suspect it is to say that Lincoln is still relevant today, but I'm not sure.

Two other statues by the same artist.

Perhaps a statue for the mutual admiration society

I was a kid when that movie came out.
People were appalled, Xtions went
nuts. It's so trivial now, but the sex
crazed Church went into fits. Billy
Wilder wanted to portray the guy
as having sex with Marilyn, but the
Hays Code wouldn't allow it. Wilder
later said he wished he'd never made
the movie.

The code was written by the Catholic
Church, which of course tried to cover
up their involvement. This is the
gist of what wasn't allowed:

Pointed profanity – by either title or lip – this includes the words "God", "Lord", "Jesus", "Christ" (unless they be used reverently in connection with proper religious ceremonies), "hell", "damn", "Gawd", and every other profane and vulgar expression however it may be spelled;

Any licentious or suggestive nudity – in fact or in silhouette; and any lecherous or licentious notice thereof by other characters in the picture;

The illegal traffic in drugs;

Any inference of sex perversion;

White slavery;

Miscegenation (sex relationships between the white and black races);

Sex hygiene and venereal diseases;

Scenes of actual childbirth – in fact or in silhouette;

Children's sex organs;

Ridicule of the clergy;

Willful offense to any nation, race or creed;

Notice in the very first one the Church
covers it's ass, and later says 'no ridicule
of clergy'. That was back when the Vatican
had power. These days all they so is pay
out money to child molestation victims.

How is it that every thread seems to eventually turn into an attack on the Catholicism?

How is it that every thread

You're exaggerating for effect. It's
a few threads, hardly every one.
People have no idea how much
that awful institution effected our
daily lives in the past.

That's the best reason to exaggerate.

And how they remained quiet while seeing horrors around them. But "it must have been ok", or the church wouldn't do it, right?

one of these days maybe we'll get to hear the details of how bob got molested when he was an altar boy. It's the only thing that could possibly explain his obsession.

I never went to church as a kid, my
parents were smart. My dad grew
up on a farm far from town, no
electric and no car. So he never
went to church either. My mom
spent years in a non religious
orphanage. So I got lucky.

My feelings about the Church come
from decades of studying the horrors
Catholics inflicted on the world, all
in the name 'Jay-sus'. It was so bad
even the pope apologized for what
the priests did in the New World.

Have they ever apologized for burning
witches and persecuting Jews and for
the religious wars they started and for
the Inquisitions that didn't end till the
20th century?

Just doing 'gods work'. Guffaw..

I find it comforting that Bob has shared his knowledge of religion with the forum. Without his take on how religion actually is, the priest wouldn't priest, and the lurkers wouldn't lurk. I'm glad he keeps it alive.

I'm glad Frg. responds as well. These type of discussions wouldn't otherwise come up in my life.
