I disagree with any "leaders" that don't want English as the national language. I don't see how having to print everything in multiple languages, or teach school in every language requested, is of any benefit to our country. I'm fine with students learning foreign language, but that's what other languages are, is foreign.

I think the whole world should agree on one language, that follows logical rules.

But on the other hand, nowadays, you should be able to produce a translated document on a computer, and only print it on demand. So, I don't know if that is as big an issue.

But I'd prefer the carrot and no stick. Just work on ways to show people more benefits of learning the common language rather than setting up ways to punish them.

And until modern times we taught immigrant kids in schools in English. If they struggled they stayed in grade and got to catch up. Sooner or later they got it.

America is actually one of the few countries that has no official language.

There have been many movements to make English the official language, but they often get derided as "hateful" or "narrow-minded".
There even used to be (maybe still around) "English as the official language" party that ran canidates just to promote that issue.

One reason we have to pay so much for ESL programs and other related school programs is because we have (and never had) an official language...
