Well, Fukishima was a long time ago so its all over by now, but it never occurred to me that a safe would float. I assumed anything so sturdy to resist being taken away and resist being broken into would be so heavy as to sink rather promptly.
Funny how far some of the detritus lands from the high tide line during storm action. There are literally tons of stuff out on the Aleutian beaches to sift through. I have friends with buckets of glass float balls. https://www.ebay.com/b/Antique-Fishing-Nets-Floats/37968/bn_2309336

Why would anyone want one? At any price?

IDK, people are funny.

I only kept a few, and I only found one of those.

In my business, we studied rigging. In the pictures you can see how a float is completely entombed in line. It is a fine example of how a person can tie up a bowling/cannon ball with rope.

Knot tying and rigging, block and tackle, is fun. Onto the yardarm matey.

NiCd batteries were invented in 1899.

What you are thinking of is nickel–metal hydride (NiMH) and lithium-ion rechargeable batteries which became available after 1989 which were much more efficient and could run electronics.

That is true that Nickel Cadmium batteries invented in 1899.

Rechargeable lead acid batteries go back to the civil war, just a few decades after commercially viable batteries were available.

My father liked rechargeable batteries and this was in the late 60's and 70's. As I recall, the batteries were D size.

The D size 34.2 x 61.5mm was introduced in 1898, so that seems perfectly plausible.

It had rechargeable batteries. They were recharged on the exercise bike
I think there was one episode where the professor built batteries out of coconuts?

Isn’t that a joke that never really happened?

IE: How come the Professor can make a radio out of a coconut, but he can’t fix the damn boat?

IIRC They did try to fix the boat and Gilligan somehow mucked it up. Again IIRC something about the glue they made.

I watched that show when it
was on the air, and it was
ridiculously silly even then.
But it was supposed to be.
Batman, Beverly Hillbillies,
Green Acres, Adams Family,
Munsters, all were purposely
silly shows.

Nothing wrong with a silly show. In that era it worked, I doubt it would today. If it entertains you for 30 mins, it did it's job.

We loved those shows, really loved
them. But it was boom times, lots
of jobs, Detroit was still cranking
out new models every year, color
TV was the rage, and the Beatles
and Monkee's with their silly songs.
The 60's really were the 60's they've
been cranked up to be.

He put too much water in the vat when they were making the glue. The boat held up for a day, but when they were ready to board it to leave, the boards starting to come apart and fly all over the beach.
