Alien was more likely to be based on "Shivers" which came out the same time as Jaws.  While it is believed that only 4 family oriented movies prior to the 1970's sold more than 100 million tickets, the first movie in the 1970's was Exorcist. Horror movies had always had a place in film, but naturally, many film makers tried to get a fraction of the success of the Exorcist. 200 million Gone with the Wind 1939 131 million The Ten Commandments 1956 142 million Sound of Music 1965 124 million Doctor Zhivago 1965 103 million The Exorcist 1973 Before The Exorcist the most successful horror film was 1953's House of Wax which sold 50 million tickets. |

I remember seeing the 1st Alien movie when it came out. I really liked the Captain, Dallas, played by Tom Skerritt. A no nonsense captain with charisma the audience can get behind. You think he will last till the end then boom. He is one of the 1st to get killed. Reminds me of Deep Blue sea with Samuel Jackson. A good no nonsense leader an audience can get behind. Alien was cutting edge in this area. A female hero in an "action" film was lauded as "groundbreaking" at the time. |
