Here's a topic: the original 1979 "Alien" was "Jaws" in a spaceship. Discuss.

Alien was more likely to be based on "Shivers" which came out the same time as Jaws.

While it is believed that only 4 family oriented movies prior to the 1970's sold more than 100 million tickets, the first movie in the 1970's was Exorcist. Horror movies had always had a place in film, but naturally, many film makers tried to get a fraction of the success of the Exorcist.

200 million Gone with the Wind 1939
131 million The Ten Commandments 1956
142 million Sound of Music 1965
124 million Doctor Zhivago 1965
103 million The Exorcist 1973

Before The Exorcist the most successful horror film was 1953's House of Wax which sold 50 million tickets.

I've read two reviews of the new Alien movie (at The Verge and Popular Mechanics of all places). One was positive, the other wasn't, but both agree it's a horror movie.

I remember seeing the 1st Alien movie when it came out.
I really liked the Captain, Dallas, played by Tom Skerritt.
A no nonsense captain with charisma the audience can get behind. You think he will last till the end then boom.
He is one of the 1st to get killed.
Reminds me of Deep Blue sea with Samuel Jackson. A good no nonsense leader an audience can get behind. Then boom, one of the 1st goners.
I like unpredictability in my movies

Today for a monster movie like this one, you figure one of the two top-billed names will get killed soon.

Alien was cutting edge in this area. A female hero in an "action" film was lauded as "groundbreaking" at the time.

IIRC, Sigourney Weaver was the first female actress to ever get paid $1 million for a movie for James Cameron's Aliens (and that they announced the sequel before they had signed her on, which probably helped her at the negotiating table...).

One could argue that every horror/monster movie is a derivative on either Frankenstein or Dracula. Both your two movies would be filed under Dracula.

Frankenstein is a rip-off of the Golem in the Bible, and Dracula is the collected legends of vampires told for centuries in Europe :)

I don't even know if he was in the Bible. Probably he's a Medieval invention.
