He was married to Loni Anderson. I have to tip my Stetson to him. RIP Burt.

I watched that movie at least 20 times as a kid. Today I would view it as a guilty pleasure, but at the age of 13 I felt no guilt at all about it

Looking at the Rotten Tomatoes ranking, I was somewhat surprised to see that Smokey did not get a bad rating. The sequel receved an awful rating. Besides Deliverance it looks like "Sharky's Machine" was the best reviewed film where Burt Lancaster was the major star.

 93% 1972 Deliverance
90% 1972 Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex * But Were Afraid to Ask
 83% 1973 White Lightning
 43% 1973 Shamus
 81% 1974 The Longest Yard
 67% 1975 Hustle
17% 1975 At Long Last Love
 82% 1976 Silent Movie
 14% 1976 Nickelodeon
 88% 1977 Semi-Tough
79% 1977 Smokey and the Bandit
 69% 1978 Hooper
 62% 1978 The End
17% 1980 Smokey and the Bandit II
 94% 1981 Sharky's Machine
 29% 1981 The Cannonball Run
56% 1982 The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
 50% 1982 Best Friends
36% 1983 The Man Who Loved Women
20% 1983 Smokey and the Bandit Part 3
 20% 1983 Stroker Ace
 20% 1984 City Heat
 13% 1984 Cannonball Run II
 29% 1985 Stick
 20% 1986 Heat
 33% 1987 Malone
 60% 1988 Switching Channels
 15% 1988 Rent-A-Cop
 89% 1989 Breaking In
55% 1989 All Dogs Go To Heaven
 18% 1989 Physical Evidence
 98% 1992 The Player
 15% 1993 Cop & 1/2
 80% 1996 Citizen Ruth
 17% 1996 Mad Dog Time
 93% 1997 Boogie Nights
 41% 1997 Bean
 14% 1997 Meet Wally Sparks
20% 1998 Universal Soldier III: Unfinished Business
 90% 1999 Pups
 38% 1999 Mystery, Alaska
 20% 2000 The Crew
 14% 2001 Driven
 20% 2002 The Last Producer
 38% 2003 Hotel
 14% 2004 Without a Paddle
 32% 2005 The Longest Yard
14% 2005 The Dukes of Hazzard
 82% 2006 Cloud 9
 5% 2006 Broken Bridges
4% 2006 In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale

 12% 2008 Delgo
 3% 2008 Deal
97% 2012 Paul Williams Still Alive
48% 2018 The Last Movie Star

He won Grammys and an Academy Award; wrote many #1 songs; starred in a Brian DePalma movie; put out his own hit records and albums; was a guest on The Tonight Show fifty times; and is the president of ASCAP...and you might not have heard of him.
In the 1970's, Paul Williams was the singer / actor / songwriter that emotional, alienated teenage boys all over the world wanted to be, a sex symbol before MTV, when sex symbols could be 5"2 and sing songs about loneliness with the Muppets. A wistful musical journey that will re-introduce a new generation to Williams' soulful classics, Paul Williams: Still Alive is the charmingly self-narrated story of Stephen Kessler's lifelong obsession with the former superstar-and what happens when the nostalgic filmmaker finally catches up with him.

I was in high school when it came out. I think my opinion of the movie was largely formed by my reaction as s teenager. The CB radio craze peaked around 1975 and by 1977 it had played and was no longer cool (at least for kids my age). That made the all of the jokes and dialogue that hinged on the CB culture really lame. Viewing the movie now, none of that matters. The CB craze of the 70s was real and it took rural America by storm as explainable as it may be.

I've read that it was the first movie to show the new south in a good light, mostly because it didn't feature barefoot inbred homicidal racists. I think it still had a long way to go, especially the Texans. As talented as Gleason was, his accent must have been inspired by Foghorn Leghorn.

To be fair i will upgrade my review from "just awful" to "worth watching", mostly because Sally Field was just so damn cute.

A lot of stars are never really able to rise above their scripts. Casting directors watch tons of lousy movies because they want to see what stands out as exceptional amongst the garbage.

His Deliverance role was excellent but I liked that movie for the author's cameo appearance as the 'don't come back here' sheriff.

Saw a billboard on the freeway with
Burt Reynolds from the 70's on it.
It read: Over and Out Burt Reynolds
