The kid, J, was kind of a nothing character the first season, but he grows in depth and leadership by the third season. I enjoy it. I don't watch The Mayans on FX because I don't want to get involved with another SOA-type show, so I guess I get your complaint. |

One of the reviews said they tricked us with the pilot. You see a family that's happy and getting along, a close knit unit that are a gang of crooks. They take in a nephew and are nicely showing him the ropes. There's potential here. The 2nd ep has them at each others throats non stop, the anxiety level never goes down. The genius of the Godfather, BB, Sopranos is, there were lots of sympathetic characters you could like. Here, so far, I hate all of them. They're greedy, dumb, every person is out for themselves, especially the mom. That type of dynamic does not work in real life, gang members have to get along with each other of it tears them apart. I'll give this half a season to get better, so far it has no entertainment value whatever. It got a lot of positive reviews, but a boatload of one star reviews too. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

Lots of violence towards kids and females. Good. But what happened in last episode. Dude has half the cop cars in the county on his tail and he has a corpse in the trunk. So he goes into tall grass and hides after turning on a water irrigation system and pumping water into the car? if it were gasoline I could understand it but how is flooding a car going to keep the cops from finding it and opening that trunk? |

Evenbob Member since: Oct 24, 2012 Threads: 146 Posts: 25011 | I watched all of season one. I has some redeeming features, the acting is good because all these people have a ton of work under their belt. The writing is good, it's the premise I have trouble with. But I can live with that if the writing stays good. They surprised me in a few places. Did not expect Pope to kill the hot, obnoxious Latino chick. The sympathetic character in the series is Pope, twisted asshole that he is. I knew the kid would not go to the cops, so I thought the writers were playing us, I thought Smurf told him to game the cops. It was even better, he was gaming the Black woman cop because she had mistreated his addict mom when he was a kid. The look Jay had on his face when he confronted her is acting at it's best, his eyes were even flashing with anger. "My mom hated her family, but she hated you more." Cop never said a word. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

The season one finale with Pope was shocking, to me at least. Pope was normally so quiet, but that seething rage under the surface sure boiled over in that scene. I still think about it. There's another twist at the end of season two to look forward to, so stick with it Bob. Great writing and acting. The kid will grow to be more of a main character in the next two seasons, and there will be a Pope vs. J confrontation coming. |
