By waving their arms around do you mean they are making the cosmological argument for God's existence? When they rest their case does that mean you have no response? Because surely they could talk about their personal experiences or a myriad of other reasons. You must really not know many Christians or some strange ones.

Just so you know the problem with the appeal to authority. Just because someone is an authority doesn't mean automatically they are right about everything. It is always better to treat an argument on its own merits than just dismissing it because someone like Einstein didn't agree. Another problem you have is how do you handle then other authority figures who hold opposite views? I have given you a list of many of the greatest scientists ever who were actually Catholic clergy, the list would be too long if it is was just those who believed in God. Then we could look at World leaders and agents of social change and see that roughly all of these people believe in God. You would be far and away outmatched in any appeal to authority so it would be really best to focus on the argument itself. Finally, I don't think any of the people you keep bringing up would actually agree with your hardline atheist stance. They would all acknowledge the possibility of God.

Bob, in regards to your comparison to Santa Claus you are viewing God like a little child. White beards and lists of whose good and bad, come on grow up. Let me just say that if God did keep lists we would all be in trouble. Those "lists"were destroyed by the loving sacrifice of Christ. Confession is a celebration of the fact that we are loved, forgiven, and saved by God.

Bob, I think you are really confused about this "no-thing" thing you keep bringing up. If you can't prove a negative then why as an atheist do you say there is no God. Is someone forcing you to be an atheist? Now a days that is very possible with all the persecution thw Church is experiencing around the world. Why would you chose to claim a neagtive is absolutely true and certain if you yourself said you can't prove it? I don't care if you don't collect stamps but please stop telling me stamps don't exist. Just say you've never seen a stamp, a lot of smart people never saw any stamps, and you don't think there is any evidence of stamps. However, don't then say you are certain that no stamps exist.

Finally, I've come to learn that most often when you say something like "why bother..." followed by some insulting excuse you really have nothing and were caught bluffing.

that's why so many simple people
believe. When you get people like

I'm not insulted by this. The god of the Bible,
was invented by staggeringly ignorant
and uneducated desert nomads thousands
of years ago. Santa is a similar but more

I think you should read some more about the ancient world. The Roman Empire, the Greeks, the Jewish scholars, early scientists and philosophers. These people put us to shame. They are the shoulders our modern world stands on.
