While their obviously is not a clear cut distinction there really needs to be two categories and the films should be submitted in each category. I think the number of screens where the films is released could be a factor.

Isn't the Oscar for big films "The People's Choice Awards"? :)

"Fences" felt like a stage play that was shot in two days. There are only like, four different locations, with most of the film time spent in one backyard set. My guess is half the production budget was Denzel Washington's salary, with another quarter going to Viola Davis.

My guess is that Denzel doesn't work for his salary of 15 years ago. He is more likely to do a picture like this for some nominal salary ($5 million) plus a share of the profits. A film like that could return a lot in DVD sales.

Virtuosity (1995) $7,500,000
Courage Under Fire (1996) $10,000,000
Fallen (1998) $12,000,000
The Siege (1998) $12,000,000
The Hurricane (1999) $10,000,000
Training Day (2001) $12,000,000
Out of Time (2003) $20,000,000
Man on Fire (2004) $20,000,000
American Gangster (2007) $40,000,000
2 Guns (2013) $20,000,000
The Equalizer (2014) $20,000,000

Denzel got a "Director" credit on the production, so he gets two paychecks.

Denzel has three director credits. I doubt that he takes more than a nominal salary for these projects, but if they make money on DVD sales he gets a piece. None of these projects probably nets him a fraction of his normal pay, I am sure they are all for artistic accomplishment.

12/16/2016 Fences $56,552,381
12/25/2007 The Great Debaters $30,236,407
12/19/2002 Antwone Fisher $21,078,145

18 Hidden Figures 3 ($25 million) 3,416
29 Arrival 8 ($47 million) 3,115
46 Hacksaw Ridge 6 (Not Available) 2,971
57 Fences 4 ($24 million) 2,368
20 La La Land 14 ($30 million) 1,865
94 Hell or High Water 4 ($12 million)1,505
69 Manchester by the Sea 6 (Not Available) 1,213
101 Moonlight (2016) 8 (Not Available) 650
73 Lion 6 (Not Available) 600

The number of those movies I've seen is zero. I wanted to see Lion but it came and went too quickly. Hidden Figures I was thinking of seeing, because its about math, but was afraid that element of the movie would be dumbed down too much. The trailer also looked very Disneyfied.

...One question that I have is how do people who are not supposed to know the outcome figure out that the presenter made an error so quickly.

According to news sources, there are two people who know who the winner is for each award, both employees of PWC. Each has a full set of envelopes with the winners in them. Each stands on one side of the stage, and hands the envelope to the presenter before they go on. According to the report, both PWC folks, along with a Producer of the broadcast that they probably informed, came on stage while the speeches were starting, and made a beeline to inspect the envelope that had just been read. It was quickly determined that the envelope was for best actress, not best picture...

I applaud the director of the broadcast for anticipating, and lining up his cameraman to catch the moment the card was held up. That's straight out of Monday Night Football. Give that guy an Emmy.

Warren Beatty obviously realized it was the wrong envelope. It was unfortunate that he wasn't told to talk to the PWC people in the event of a question. His mistake was to show the card to Faye Dunaway who just saw the movie title.

The four films that won 2 or more Oscars seem to have had little affect on boxoffice revenue, although I am sure it will help with DVD and streaming revenue
19 La La Land LG/S $148,445,589
46 Hacksaw Ridge LGF $67,209,615
69 Manchester by the Sea RAtt. $47,533,212
95 Moonlight (2016) A24 $26,994,479

Fences only earned one Oscar, but it was an acting award
57 Fences Par. $57,388,479

No. I almost did. Still plan to get it on NetFlix.

I just finished the DVD of Moonlight. I can't think of a negative thing to say about it. Very good acting. A story you don't hear very often. Very raw and authentic. However, it isn't the kind of movie I would watch twice. I tend to think it got a lot of votes out of a sense of guilt over the very white Academy Awards the previous year. I don't begrudge that it won, because I can't say another other contender was better, because I didn't see any of them, I think.

I'm not sure what my point is. I will say that anybody who voted for Trump will probably hate Moonlight, just to save some people's time.
