It was a brilliant move as host. He knows that nobody is actually going to blame him in the end, and he will get kudos for defusing tension and anger while in the spotlight. One question that I have is how do people who are not supposed to know the outcome figure out that the presenter made an error so quickly. |

I have sworn off of awards shows as a whole unless there is some very special tribute planned that I would like to see. There have become too many of them and I just can't listen to people thanking everyone for seemingly endless moments. The political stuff did not even come in to play in this--I haven't watched any awards show for several years. I'd rather watch something else. I did follow it to see what Hacksaw Ridge won; we had watched the movie the night before and I thought it was really good. I don't know if it was "better" than other movies that I haven't seen since I rarely see a movie that is even nominated for "Best Picture" before the awards are given. Most of them, not even after they are given... I followed the posting of winners by a local channel to get that info. I don't know how they made such a goof in announcing a winner...read the damn card!! Holy crap. |

I suspect you saved yourself a lot of money, as La La Land was the heavy favorite for Best Picture. I knew something was amiss when it wasn't picking up some of the technical awards like Costume and the two Sound categories early on... It's odd that the academy felt it was worthy of 14 nominations (tied for the most nominations ever for a single film), but not worthy of winning Best Picture. Best Picture is a category everyone in the Academy gets to vote on. I think the desire to be politically correct encourages the voting members to make "progressive" choices. Is this better than in the past when the Academy was more exclusive, and the movie that made the most money in the box office would be the front runner, and often the eventual winner? I am sure there are going to be several openings at Price Waterhouse Coopers today. They blew up the biggest award of the night. Egads. |

Everyone in the Academy gets to vote on every category. For the nominations, specific sectors get to cast a vote. Actors nominate actors, editors nominate editors, etc. But many people have multiple credits that allow them to vote for nominations in several categories. For the nomination for best picture, though, everyone gets to cast a vote.
And this still won't quiet the Marisa Tomei Oscar Urban Legend. Donald Trump is a one-term LOSER |

Yeah, someone had one job... make sure the envelope you hand out has the right name of the award on the front. I did screw up a combination lock code for a puzzle I set this weekend, so I can't be too snooty, but I wasn't being paid 5-6 figures either... It is said that your life flashes before your eyes just before you die.... it's called Life |

While none of the 9 BP nominations had a massive production budget, some are designed to make money, and others are clear art house movies. I would say that Hidden Figures, La La Land, Arrival, and Hacksaw Ridge were quality films that were expected to turn a profit. The other five films were arthouse films. While their obviously is not a clear cut distinction there really needs to be two categories and the films should be submitted in each category. I think the number of screens where the films is released could be a factor. Moonlight was showing in a max of only 650 theaters before it was nominated. La La land was showing in 1,865 theaters before it's nomination. Hidden figures in 3,416 theaters. "Fences" felt like a stage play that was shot in two days. There are only like, four different locations, with most of the film time spent in one backyard set. My guess is half the production budget was Denzel Washington's salary, with another quarter going to Viola Davis. |
