We could, it would just be a different word. And one thing I have noticed is dogs often get along better within their own breed vs among different breeds. Not all of course, but dogs that dislike other dogs often will get along with their own kind.

I said "obvious physical characteristics". Swedes are physically very different looking than Spaniards. But we consider them the same "race" and the physical differences to be ethnic. Africans have some obviously different physical characteristics of which skin color is the most often cited.

When the colossal Olmec heads were discovered in Mexico in the mid 19th century, they had no skin color as they were stone statues. But people felt that the broad noses and wide lips were obvious physical characteristics of Africans. Also cranial analysis associated with race was a big area of scholarship in the 19th century. The scientists felt that the head shape of these statues indicated that they were from Africa. They didn't have carbon dating in 1862, but they knew that the statues were old. So the world got excited about a previously unknown migration from Africa to Mexico that happened centuries before Colombus.


Carbon dating eventually determined the Olmec culture to be the original civilization of the new world, predating the Mayan and Zapotec. There are no ruins of their buildings standing. Scientists do not believe an ocean crossing from Africa could have happened more than 2000 years ago. They assume that Olmecs were descended from the people that walked across the land bridge more than 11,000 years ago.



I think we generally assume that Vikings in the 9th and 10th century made open ocean voyages of up to about 700 miles in their discovery of Newfoundland.
There probably was open ocean voyages of similar lengths thousands of years ago in the Pacific. The original settlement of Hawaii 1700 years ago may have involved a voyages of over 2000 miles.

It is about 1800 miles from Africa to Brazil. Brazil is a long way from the lowlands of Mexico. But some of the Olmec heads are probably 3000 years ago. The idea of voyages of that length that long ago is considered extremely unlikely.
