They
are supposed to be filing quarterly taxes
if they paid more that $1000 in taxes last
year or they expect to pay more than $1000
this year.

oh yeah, this always goes to hell. The IRS will catch up with this.

Same people said they would never have called a cab.

Don't kid yourself, yes they would. Paying
for a ride is paying for a ride, if you have
another way to get somewhere you'll take that
99% of the time. Summer was always starvation
time, people walked and rode bikes and
waited at bus stops. People who ride bikes or
walk aren't calling Uber because paying for
a ride is so cool. Gee, Bob, you sure a know
it all. About this subject, I am. I know every
aspect of this business from every angle, it's
why I'm not in it anymore.

It takes time, especially these days when
they have fewer people. But once they
find you, they never ever ever forget
you. Ever.

Back when I did antique shows in the 80's,
I didn't keep track of money and never
claimed it. The few people that did had
nothing but horror stories. If you file just
once, they never stop bugging you. Every
3 months you get a reminder, and then a
threat, and then phone calls. The season
is over, but the IRS doesn't know that.
If you deal in cash, you're better off just
keeping your mouth shut.

But all the sharing ride companies keep
immaculate records and report your
earnings regularly. There's no place to
hide.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

This is a huge point. Cab drivers have far
fewer accidents than the public because
they're professional drivers. They drive
defensively every minute behind the
wheel. I would be terrified getting into
some soccer mom's Toyota, and I'm
serious.

No, there are zero drug tests required.
I guarantee there are ride share drivers
high as a kite the whole time they drive.
It's a job that attracts the lowest people
in society.
There is an intangible value as well for "street smarts". I was just talking with a friend who moved from LA to Atlanta, he was telling me some of the tricks to avoid a smash and grab while you are driving, such as keeping the windows up, doors locked, and distance enough in front of you to pull ahead and turn at stop lights, instead of coasting up to the guy in fronts bumper.

There are places you just don't want to go in LA, Chicago, Detroit, New York, St. Louis, Atlanta and probably Mexico city, or Ankara Turkey. Taking uber in those city's is like picking up nickels in front of a steam roller.

Buyer beware, and cab company's are a "known known". There are scams being planned as I type. Wait till Wizard gets picked up by Mickey driving a prius, with a snoot full..J/K... With a company of drivers say fifty or so, those guys are repeatedly vetted, and the derelicts get weeded out. Each week there is a new uber who is mostly unknown.

As far as catching a ride home from the bar, that has got to be slowing down as well. When I quit drinking 3 taverns filed for chapter 11.

There is a reason why, males under the age of 25 are the most expensive to insure. Remembering a tragedy from making a choice purely over saving a few dollars will last a lot longer than temporary pride of getting the best price on something as cheap as a ride. Buying a new car, or home or some large expense makes sense to me, it's worth searching for the best price. Something as little as IDK, 10 bucks that cost me dearly, I would wear my leg out kicking myself in the ass. Saving such small change could end up being a pyrrhic victory.

Obviously it isn't about the money.

Sorry, still disagree. You see, I have seen it happen. I know myself that I would call Uber when I might not call a cab.

People are calling Uber because it is something people are starting to accept more and more. Cabs have a certain low-brow image while Uber is new and hip. Drivers staged all over town means the wait is probably less. The further you get from the airport and hotel districts the more the difference as well.

Cab companies should not pretend they can fight this. Record companies tried to ignore download sales and single-track sales. How did that work out? Only record stores I see are selling used stuff. Jobs brought the record industry to its knees, told them download tech was here, like it or not.

The cab model has not changed in 90 years. Now Uber is bringing the industry to modern times.

We haven't even touched on insurance.
Right now if you drive Uber and don't
have a commercial policy, have an accident
and they will drop you. That means you're
now high risk, good luck finding any insurance
that doesn't cost hundreds a month for the
next 10 years. You can lie, and then when the
Uber insurance co tells your insurance company
that you drive for Uber, that's insurance fraud
and you'll never get car insurance again.

So you either pay thru the nose every month for
a commercial policy, or pray you never have an
accident. Of course most drivers never think this
thru because all they see is easy money to be made
giving people 'rides'.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

INSTEAD of cabs! Not because they would
rather give some stranger 9 bucks and
leave their own car at home. Actually 18
because they have to get home somehow.
Not happening, never will happen. You
act like cabs are all vomit filled stink holes.
If a driver working for me didn't keep his
cab washed and vac'd he didn't drive.

And for every call where somebody had to
wait 10 min, there were twice as many that
were there in 5min. We had cabs in every
part of the city at all times.

No, it's bringing it back to the 30's
where everybody who owned a
car was a cab driver. It's a step
backwards, not forward.

If the cab drivers and companies are singing the blues over Uber, let me offer a suggestion -- develop your own app to hail a cab in two clicks.

Don't ask me to call and ask for a pick-up. Whenever I do that I'm told it will take 30-60 for somebody to show up.

I think what we need is Uber drivers
sitting on every street in America.
Who cares if they go broke, it's
the customer that's important.
A car in 30 seconds or less, that's
a business plan. Drivers will quit
every day, who cares, lots of dopes
to replace them.
