But margins are thin on groceries and on clothing.

I do a lot of price comparisons between what we sell and what supermarkets sell. Going by our costs and price differences, I'd say groceries carry a 15-30% margin over cost in food items (no idea on non-food items). Plus volume sales of food are very high compared to electronics.

On clothing I'm out of date, but the common manufacturer's price discount over retail for major department stores was between 45 and 55%.

Grocery store make money on the "perimeter." Produce, meat, deli, bakery, and frozen. They get slotting allowances. But they also have many times the revenue. Probably other reasons as well.

A good friend of mine manages a large grocery store in Vegas and he said that banana's are their most popular SKU and bags of ice are their highest margin.

I also believe he said that Frito-Lay pays a huge price for slotting and won't even allow some competitors to have any shelf space. At his store Wise chips may not have any shelf space at all but they are allowed to put up portable in-aisle displays.

I tried 1 1/2 episodes of Mad Men
Just don't get it.

You have no idea how good that makes
me feel. One of the best shows in the
last 15 years, I've seen the whole thing
3 times and will see it again. The fact
that you don't 'get it' and are a Hillary
fan, makes perfect sense. What's even
more amazing is they let people like
you vote.

Some people can only see the world through the lens of Liberal vs. Conservative. It's kinda sad really.

I'm an American Citizen
I am amazed that you are amazed I have the right to vote
Its an absurd view to have that those that don't like mad men should not be able to vote
I would take Mad Magazine over mad men any day.
Mad Magazine, now that's brilliance
Just downloaded Absolutely MAD Magazine - 50+ Years , over 600 complete issues 1952 to 2006, 17500 pages.

Shoot, I forgot to put 'sarcasm alert' under
my post, I forgot who it was aimed at. Sorry.

(you know that you don't don't have to
capitalize 'citizen' in the sentence you
used, right?)

I don't think you get humor
My post was in jest regarding voting and comparing Mad Men to Mad Magazine :-)
Anyway
Just ended my Amazon membership
Got my moneys worth binging on Bosch, OZ and the Wire.
Was paying just over 10 bucks a month
When I canceled, was offered 8.99 a month streaming video service only
Just don't have the time
Have Netflix and now being sucked into a gigantic huge video game, Fallout 4 with the entire city of Boston to explore post nuclear war
So completely canceled Amazon
May go back once season 3 of Bosch is being streamed

If/when you go back, I know someone who would pay for a recording of "The Grand Tour" found on that service.

Seriously. Let me know.
