Well it works that way in theory. Problem is for me if I calculate the cost of the battery, and the lifespan, it is cheaper to buy electricity off the grid than to fill and empty the battery. And that is without the cost of generation.

But many devices are inherently designed to run on AC. Washers, dryers, vacuum cleaners, heaters, stove, microwaves, kitchen gadgets, incandescent lighting. Most Americans are addicted to these devices.

You might want to recalculate your figures. Adding caffeine to solar ells adds two percent to their efficiency and adds 850 hours to life expectancy of the cell.

Just listening to the daily auto news. Wasn't even noticing.

TSLA is down 40% YTD!

Cash seems to be getting tight. EV sales seem to be hitting their natural peak for now.

Report I saw said it could fall to $10.

Who buys it out?

It's fascinating how electric cars are popular in California (almost 8% market share in 2018) but not in the other 49 states. In the first quarter of 2019, Tesla's Model 3 (15,805) outsold the Honda Accord, (14,300) Toyota Corolla (14,075) and Nissan Altima (4,011). The Toyota Camry (15,891) beat the Model 3, but only by 86 units!

Between January 1, 2017 and April 30, 2019 almost 290,000 electric cars were sold in California. We can write off California as a weird outlying anomaly... except that California's automobile market is HUGE. It has as many vehicles on the road as New York, New Jersey, Ohio, and Missouri combined.

Could be the large Asian population in California
Asians are used to driving electric cars
More electric cars were bought in China then the rest of the planet combined
China dominates the electric car industry
China bought 1.2 million electric cars last year

CA does have that mandate. Auto news I listen to has kind of said that Tesla is the EV market for the most part. Everyone else is either just making the minimum number for regulatory reasons or not really catching on. I am sure gas prices in CA help drive sales to Tesla.

People in CA probably think an EV is a help to the environment. I was on YT and one guy replied there were no emissions from an EV. I mentioned that a Tesla 50% runs on coal and natural gas. Guy actually said that does not matter that the car is responsible for no emissions, the power plant was.

TSLA is at the moment in make-or-break. Next 12-18 months will determine if they survive as an independent or have to sell to a larger partner. Renault/Pugeot might end up with them. Stock is tanking all year and Musk's ability to roll over financing is getting constrained.

Electric cars are more viable in California than most of the US. In the winter if you want heat or defrost it comes from electric heat that runs off of the battery. This can make a very significant difference in the range on a charge, as much as 40% in very cold weather. This is another thing that seldom gets talked about as it doesn't fit the scenario of zero omissions that is being pushed.

I noted that for years. When it got cold last winter some Tesla believers were stunned.

Yes. This is a huge factor. Current US average is $2.83. Los Angeles average is $3.96. San Francisco is $4.10.

Only 4% of California's electricity comes from coal.

Here are the numbers for California:

Natural gas: 33%
Hydro: 17%
Solar: 10%
Wind: 9%
Nuclear: 9%
Geothermal: 4%
Coal: 4%
Biomass: 2%
