Thanks. I will try to hit 40 sometime in February, I hope.

Do you think there is any advantage to fast walking for 8 straight hours at 4 mph? At your level of fitness you probably won't be breathing heavily. But just to see what it feels like to be exerting effort for that long a period of time and to find out what level of food intake you need.

I don't know if you have heard of the Tarahumara?

We met some Purepecha also known as Tarascan . They don't run quite as fantastic distances as the Tarahumara, but they are given to some very long distances. Even the small children vanish for 24 hours to do these long walks.

The book born to run goes on and on about the Tarahumara... fantastically inspiring book (at least for me).

The whole idea of persistence hunting is fascinating. The idea is that a human being can chase an antelope in the mid day sun until the antelope can't run anymore and can be killed at very close range. Human beings can sweat and carry water, while the much faster antelope can only pant (which it can't do while running).

Most of us will never exercise for 8 hours straight in our life. It might be beneficial to walk or run for 8 hours just to see what it feels like, before you try to do it on a unicycle.

Set a new distance record today at 31 miles. Here is the Strava entry. 1,000 feet of elevation net elevation gain too.

I still had energy left at the end too. Could have gone another five miles or so without too much discomfort.
Wow! 50 is sounding too easy now. Perhaps the distance should be increased, or the time decreased?

Yes, the challenge is starting to look too easy, but I'm thinking ahead to beating the record down the road.

On another topic, the UniGeezer, Terry Peterson, has been mentioned quite a few times in this thread. I just noticed he has a very good video on ventriloquism.

I think that "too easy" may be getting ahead of the curve. While it does look promising, you still haven't contended with the lactate threshold.

What was the time on your longest run in training for the marathon? What was your marathon time?

My longest run in training was only 22 miles. So the marathon itself was brutal. I got to 20 just fine but everything past 23 or so was just brutal. I mostly walked the last three miles, putting my time at an unimpressive 5:06. After I finished I got enormous cramps and couldn't move for about half an hour.

Well, Ace said reaching the lactate threshold at around 7 hours for the 50 mile run was much worse than hitting the wall on the half a dozen marathons he had run.But once he rested he could still sprint the last quarter mile.

So "too easy" may be premature. But I will say you are inspirational.

+1 to that. I don't think I could ride my bike 30 miles.

Make that +2. I rode my bike 20 miles this year. Took me 6 days to do it =p
