I thought he said he used 110mm crank arms in the video.

His full run down of all of his equipment starts at 2:50 in the video. I thought he said 114mm (but he was at beach the whole time), but he describes pedals, seat, rest, etc.

He started his videos over 8 years ago (and now has over 400). And I am sorry but he didn't begin in his late 40's, but started at age 50. Even at his training rate it took him 5 years to do a century. His first 100 mile century ride in 2010 raised money for the American Cancer Society.

I visited Red Rock casino area on Sunday, and noted three things:
1) It is a steady, unrelenting climb from the 95 heading west. There didn't seem to be any significant flat spots.
2) Folks drive aggressively, and don't anticipate well. Especially in the Costco parking lot.
3) It's the winter solstice, so it got dark early and it was moonless that night.

Congratulations on your performance to date! Please ride safely.

Does the energy and time saved on the downhill portions equal the energy and time lost on the uphill portions?

I think this is the first thread split in DT history. I've split-off threads on the water/gravity topic to Does falling water chill due to losing gravitational energy?.

This thread drives me insane, yet I'm
drawn to it. I can't force myself to
block it. Arrguah..
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

Much like the HotBlonde Challenge.

If this turns out like the HBC, I'll ban you myself ;)
Be bold and risk defeat, or be cautious and encourage it.

Why would a thread about a man trying to reach a goal for his 50th birthday bother you? It's a little into technical details, but it isn't political.

Set a new distance record today at 32 miles. Here is the Strava entry. 1,000 feet of elevation net elevation gain too.

I still had energy left at the end too. Could have gone another five miles or so without too much discomfort.

I see elapsed time at 4:53 . Were you doing something or were you tired? If you were doing something then that is fantastic!

Either way you seem way ahead of schedule. I figured you wouldn't make it to 40 miles until a few weeks before your challenge.

I went to Taco Bell and also a bike store. I think the breaks helped but weren't absolutely necessary. One thing I bought at the bike store were electrolyte tablets, per the recommendation of the UniGeezer.

Thanks. I will try to hit 40 sometime in February, I hope.
