And will continue to do so. Look at the Khyber Pass. The tribes there don't care who claims ownership.... they just shoot any soldiers who enter no matter what country they are from.

This is why they are called nation-states. Nation refers to a set of people with a common tie such as race, ethnicity, religion, culture. State is the geographic country, the military, the government, etc. A nation-state combines both. If you control it and can keep control, you have a country or nation-state.

Not unheard of in that part of the world. When you have a huge desert between you and your neighbor you didn't need to survey a border back then.

Disagree. There are plenty of maps that show the area of Kuwait as part of the Ottoman and as part of Turkey, and not as an independent area with borders. The necessity for a border occurred in 1897-1899 when it became a British Protectorate which gave the Emir stability from being taken over by various factions working in the region. When BP discovered oil in 1938, it gave Kuwait the need to become independent.

It is not that complicated at all. What is now Kuwait was a coastal people under the Ottomans. Even today once you get out of Kuwait City the place is very empty. What is now Iraq was more inland and did not and does not have any kind of real ties with Kuwait then or now.

Kuwait was not inside The Red Line Agreement (a/k/a self-denying agreement) when it was drawn.

A few days ago when we commented, somewhat in jest, on the seemingly impressive strategic planning behind the Islamic State Jihadists becoming a "commodities trading powerhouse" (when it was revealed that ISIS had sold the grain it had stolen from the Itaqi government back to the government), we described just how well-versed in the ways of the modern world ISIS was. Now, thanks to Bloomberg we can quantify this particular strategy, and put top-line numbers with the ISIS faces, so to speak: "The Islamic State, which now controls an area of Iraq and Syria larger than the U.K., may be raising more than $2 million dollars a day in revenue from oil sales, extortion, taxes and smuggling, according to U.S. intelligence officials and anti-terrorism finance experts."

How did they get so sophisticated so fast?

Who ever heard of them before a year ago? They sure have brand new uniforms and flags, even many of they're shoes look new. So today the uae and egypt bomb tripoli doing flyovers of lots of territory and the The obamma admin. is suprised? I would be too if they had that kind of stealth to zip right over the top of Israel who is in conflict so probably not watching their radar. Or over the top of the 5th fleet. Stealthy indeed. Went right over the top of these fundamental islamists to bomb other radical islamists. Hard to sort them all out.

The US relationship with SA has been "complicated" for a long time. I have a feeling our relationship with Russia since it became somewhat more democratic, is going to be the same way. I'm not sure what Russia is nowadays, semi-authoritarian? It's not exactly the Russia of old, but not exactly reformed either. Guess it depends on who you ask?
