Right, because we are outnumbered by the dense. |

Saw this yesterday on FB. About why we have the EC. Really more striking that with that northeast corridor, SoCal, South Florida, and Chicago we really have just 4 main centers of population. Yes, other big counties, but control those 4 and you control things. If invasion of the USA was possible, this is where the occupation would take place. The President is a fink. |

President Obama won 32 congressional districts in states that he lost. So if every state proportioned electoral college votes the same way Nebraska and Maine do, then Romney would have received an extra 99 - 32 = 67 electoral college votes and President Obama would have gotten 67 less votes. As Romney needed 64 more EC votes to win, he would be our POTUS. The "winner take all" system that all but two states use to proportion it's votes is not in the constitution. It wasn't even that common for the first half century of the countries existence. It really is a state decision. Obviously in 2016 President-elect Trump won victories in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, North Carolina and Florida which contain congressional districts that voted for Clinton. I suspect that he would have won even if all states used the alternative allocation system. In fact, I think the two metrics above will be close to equal. It will take a while to do this calculation, as votes are tallied by counties which don't lend themselves to easy division by congressional district. Any alternative opinions?
The shaded areas would be even smaller if they highlighted urban areas that contain half the USA population. |

What do you mean there? Population lines not county lines? The President is a fink. |

There are highly detailed maps published by the census bureau that meet their standards of an "urban area"(UA). An UA like Riverside-San Bernardino is a tiny percentage of the area of the counties. The county encloses large desert and rural areas. http://www2.census.gov/geo/maps/urbanarea/uaoutline/UA2000/ua75340/ua75340_00.pdf The creator of the above map simply highlighted counties totaling half the population of the USA. Had they highlighted urban areas the total area would be much smaller. Such a map would be very difficult to create with standard software. |
