AFAIK they still work, and can be used in case of emergency like a credit card hack

No, you don't have to have a metal card. I have never had a metal card, the raised numbers on the plastic cards always worked fine.

My newest card doesn't have raised numbers, though, so if ever I encountered one of those again, they would have to write in the numbers.

Only metal card I ever heard of was the AMEX Black Card.
