With the ever increasing fragmentation of media that will be harder and harder to pull off.

Yes, but media stars develop production companies which create other stars that they get a piece of the pie. David Letterman produced many shows. Ellen Degeneres is starting to create sitcoms starring other people. Look at these talk show stars that get credits for producing shows (other than their own shows)

Most of the shows Lettermen and Ellen
produced were flops. Letterman will make
money forever on Raymond, it was worth
it just for that one show.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

David Letterman's annual salary of $20 million, but compared to his previously $50 million-a-year salary. Perhaps he figures he could make more producing without the strain of running the daily talk show.

Ellen Degeners's salary keeps going up (reported $70 million per annum).

Real Time Net Worth As of 5/9/15
#603 Oprah Winfrey $3 Billion

With the exception of Sheldon, Oprah is right up there with the gaming billionaires

The wealth of very rich families is tricky.
When I go into a Walmart and pick up
a jar of mayo, it's part of the Walton
family fortune. What they're worth
and how much cash they have are
two different things. I know I know,
that's a primitive way of looking at
it. But that's how I measure wealth.
How much gold you have buried
in the backyard. I've known several
people who were worth millions and
who drove 10 year old cars because
all their money was in trusts and
property. They lived almost month
to month.

One guy inherited his family wealth
and lived in a three story mansion
all alone. He never got to enjoy the
money because it was tied up in so
many things he died in his 60's while
trying to untangle it all. I was in his
house, it was like a museum. Full of
art and antiques, he lived in constant
fear of break-ins.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

It's strange when people with big net worth have to live in such conditions, but it's quite common, I think. A person may have a big comfortable house, good car and other stuff, but he may look like not a rich person. It's not like you're some of these celebrities like described at celebtopnetworth.com who live in luxury and don't think about any troubles. A sad irony, I would say.
