TBBT runs on Warner.

Warner is considered a production company, although it owns 50% of "The CW" broadcast network with CBS. Warner produces or co-produces the TV shows and owns the show for syndication.

But people in the USA associate a show with the Network that broadcasts it. As Warner only produces 4 of CBS shows (3 are sitcoms) it is more likely you see only the Warner shows in Mexico.

Odd Couple is produced by CBS television networks

Life in Pieces is produced by 20th Century Fox

I know this. Until 1995 the cable company showed network affiliates on the central time zone for CBS, ABC and NBC (never FOX).

Now they show the channels I mentioned. They don't necessarily correspond to the US networks or even the production companies. Series often jump between channels, too. How I Met Your Mother was on the Fox channel (which showed it at 4 in the afternoon!), then it moved to Sony (which showed the last season on prime time). Friends was on Sony, but for the last two seasons it was shown on Warner.

I assume they buy rights to shows for a set time. When that expires, it's up for grabs.

Deadline publishes the ratings including DVR viewings for the first 7 days (I think also including web viewing and Video on Demand). The total numbers are much higher.

From the list of 30 minute shows, you can see that TBBT still dominates the Sitcom landscape.

Wow, The Simpsons have fallen really low.

Maybe the end is finally nearing?

Total viewership can be deceiving as to how much a show is worth. For example Modern Family actors receive some of the highest pay in television, yet their viewership is only 10% more than the freshman sitcom "Angel from Hell" which was cancelled after only 5 episodes were aired.

9,833 MODERN FAMILY ABC
9,044 ANGEL FROM HELL CBS CANCEL

The big difference is the age and income bracket of the viewers. But also shows like "The Simpsons" already have a very lucrative syndication deal in place. So the year after the new episodes air, they are starting to generate income from syndication. There is an almost immediate cash flow.

The other rule is that shows don't necessarily compete with all the other shows on television, but primarily you see how they are doing against the other shows on the Network. "The Simpsons" is still the highest rated half hour show on the Fox Network. Even a show that has thin margins is better than a show that loses money.

102	THE SIMPSONS	FOX	4,747
111 FAMILY GUY FOX 4,282
114 THE LAST MAN ON EARTH FOX 4,234
118 BROOKLYN NINE-NINE FOX 3,980
125 NEW GIRL FOX 3,698
144 BOB’S BURGERS FOX 2,904
151 THE SIMPSONS – ENCORE FOX 2,636

And a half-hour, generally funny cartoon is good viewing when killing time, waiting for another show, spending idle time, etc.

Or it may mean the network is doing horribly with other half-hour shows, which can lead to The Simpsons being cancelled once the network solves this problem :)

Every silver lining has a cloud.

Truth is some themes are getting repetitive, and there's pretty much zero internal consistency left.

There must be a silver lining to half hour shows. You would think they are much more expensive to make, and once you have a hit show it is better to sell commercial time for a full hour. But the highest paid TV actors are generally for half hour shows. I guess once they are hit they are much easier to sell in synidication since people only half to pay attention for a shorter amount of time.

Last year Fox's shows "Family Guy" and "The Last Man on Earth" did better than the Simpson's. There is something about the longevity of the show. In 2007 "The Simpsons Movie" made half a billion dollars on a Production Budget of $75 million. Homer joked about people paying to go to the movies for something they can see for free on the television.

Back to TBBT: during its fourth season, it became television's highest rated comedy, just barely beating out eight-year champ Two and a Half Men. However, in the age 18–49 demographic (the show's target age range), it was the second highest rated comedy, behind ABC's Modern Family. Since season #5 it has remained the undisputed champion of half hour shows by any metric. It beats most one hour scripted shows, although NCIS is the king of television for old people and Empire is the highest ranked show for under age 50.

But the business model for broadcast of scripted shows has to break soon. Netflix is going to beat it largely because they can sell to an international audience. There worldwide subscriber base is at over 80 million, and will soon surpass the TV households in the USA (95-100 million). They don't really car when you watch the series, as it could easily be a few months after they are available. Netflix is selling subscriptions, not advertising based on ratings.

Given a few weeks, there will be regularly more than 20 million viewers of a TV show on Netflix, especially when there subscriber base grows to 150 million worldwide. For broadcast it is impossible to go much above 20 million in the first 7 days even including websites, video on demand, and DVRs where people usually skip commercials.

I was a fan of the Simpsons in the 90's until
it started to get repetitive. I can't imagine what
it's like now. I also find the voice of Marge
so irritating it's like fingernails on a blackboard.
I cringe.

It's ok. It lasted a lot longer than I thought it would. And there remain only three things pending: 1) We've yet to see Penny's mother, 2) We've yet to learn Penny's last name, 3) How will it end?

Katey Sagal (Peg Bundy from Married With Children) has been cast as Penny's mom for this upcoming season.
