I couldn’t be a doctor without college
My ex couldn’t be a lawyer without college
My wife couldn’t be a dentist without college
My first son couldn’t be an entomologist without college
My second son couldn’t be a computer programmer without college (I guess he technically could, but he wouldn’t have even gotten an interview without one)
His wife couldn’t be a school teacher without college.

Of course college isn’t for everyone. There are lots of jobs that don’t require it. But don’t dismiss the myriad of jobs that require one.

I would say a lot of the best programmers I worked with did not have a college degree. It may be different now, but many people my age were self taught computer nerds. Those that just had access to a computer in the 1980's had to learn a lot on their own as kids because very few high schools taught computer programming. I did get a degree, after five years, but it was not necessary at that time. I had my first programming job when I was in high school and have only ever had one other job for about three weeks. For three weeks I was a blackjack dealer, also with no formal training. I quit the blackjack job because they wouldn't give me a Saturday off and I wanted to take the Air Traffic Control test.

Edit: I probably hired 25-30 programmers through the years and a college degree was only used for a tiebreaker when the candidates seemed equal to me.
At my age a Life In Prison sentence is not much of a deterrent.

But now she need not go to law school or take a bar exam to become an attorney in Oregon.

Oregon allows people to become lawyers without attending law school through an apprenticeship program or other alternative pathways.

I went the traditional way with college, law school and the bar exam (passed it first and only time I took it, ye of little faith).

This is the route Kim Kardashian is taking, by taking an apprenticeship with a law firm beginning in 2018. She failed the 1st exam three times before passing so she could continue. I hope she makes it. Being an honorable lawyer is a noble and laudable thing.

There was a point in time where he only access to a computer for a student was the the rich high school or college time-share system. That's how Bill Gates got his start. Bill Gates also came from wealth, had a high native intelligence, was a hard worker and was academically gifted and accomplished before he even stepped foot at Harvard. Zuck has a similar story, although by then access to computers was commonplace. It takes an almost perfect storm of characteristics to make it as a college dropout.

Seen this happen. What happens is they are great at computers but the rest is kind of boring. Why does one need a science with a lab to program? But pre-2000s you mostly had to go the college route, at least to get some cred. Back then we did not have all the certifications we have now. Today you get the certs. Usually you have to make your bones working the help desk at first. But that pays you instead of having to pay for college.

I don't agree with that. Most of the good programmers I knew back then earned their cred by creating and selling software before they were even 18 years old. Again, I am speaking of the best not your average programmer.

When it came to university computer classes for me, they were pretty much just a waste of time. I can only think of one single thing I learned via university computer classes in my five years. A good computer programmer learns by doing similar to a lot of other trades. I did enjoy the "college experience" of moving away from home, drinking too much, and carousing with girls. Although, as a computer nerd there was probably a lot less carousing than for other students.

You need a science with a lab to learn laboratory science, at least on an introductory level. That laboratory science is integral to a quality, college education.

I haven’t used my lab credit for one thing in my life ever.

Mike Johnson wins on the first ballot because of president Trump. Like there was a chance he wasn't going to win.
