A tariff is just a tax, folks. Payable in the USA by businesses ( and eventually their customers ) within the USA.

Tariffs are a tax on foreign goods, and they historically do not cause inflation.

The US has been using tariffs to protect our jobs, manufacturers and farmers since 1789, when George Washington imposed a 5% tariff on most imported goods.

They were Alexander Hamilton's idea.

227 years of tariffs and they suddenly became an issue for the weak kneed when Trump effectively imposed a few of his own.

The Trump tariffs only covered about 4% of foreign goods. Mostly steel, which was being subsidized by the governments of China, Russia, Japan, Germany, Brazil and others, to undercut US prices.

The Chinese government was also subsidizing washing machines and solar panels in order to put US manufacturers out of business, so Trump imposed tariffs on those as well.

His tariffs remain so effective, that Biden has kept them in place for the past four years.

In fact,

'Biden finalizes increases to some of Trump’s China tariffs'

'The tariff rate will go up to 100% on electric vehicles, to 50% on solar cells and to 25% on electrical vehicle batteries, critical minerals, steel, aluminum, face masks and ship-to-shore cranes beginning September 27, according to the US Trade Representative’s Office.'

They are bad to you because you don't live here.. Duh. Tariffs work, they've always worked, they're working now and Trump hasn't even done it yet. Foreign leaders are flocking to Mar-A-Lago to kiss the king's ring. And his ass.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

Agree. Trump is using the THREAT of tariffs to get things done. Sounds like Mexico and Canada are understanding this.

Repeat…. Tariffs are a tax. That brings money into the Federal government. If you agree that the Federal government needs to be funded, more money collected via tariffs means either
1. Lower deficits
2. Lower federal taxes
3. More money for federal programs

Like any tax, there can be negative consequences. It’s just stupid to drag your knuckles on the ground screaming ‘tariffs bad’. Some I’m sure are. Some I’m sure aren’t.

After threatening tariffs on Mexico and Trump talking to Mexico's woman president a caravan of 2000 heading north was magically disbanded over the weekend. The Mexican government got them onto buses and headed for different places in Mexico where they could decide what to do with themselves. Tariffs work in more ways than one.

Pity your hero never thought of this before, when his favourite word was 'Wall'. How much did he invest in that uncompleted white elephant? $11Billion as at 2020? Oh. I forgot. Mexico paid for that. Maybe that lady president is doing drumph the favour of breaking up that convoy, so he won't pester her for the latest installment.

This tariff fad is just drumphs latest snake oil universal tonic.

Still, as EB reminds me. I don't live in the USA. I won't get the pain or benefits of his pet projects. Just some collateral damage but he'll be putting America First. First to go the way of everything he touches. To hell in a handcart.

IF drumph's tariffs raise any revenue, at all, for your Federal Government, then just maybe that revenue will go a tiny way to plugging some of the other massive deficit growth that his policies will cause.

With drumph's hand on the purse strings and spending policies, it'll all get fudged, probably the same way that your deficit always gets fudged by both your parties.

"As of now, the American national debt is at a whopping $36 trillion" $100,000 for each of you.

If Trump is wrong on anything, he'll double-down. He won't change course. He'll martingale the US. He'll fire everyone and not blame himself.

So, nothing better go really wrong.

A guy who voted for a woman who promised to raise taxes should not be complaining about tariffs.
