I am guessing the same reason Scientologists use. At my age a Life In Prison sentence is not much of a deterrent. |

Probably the same excuse that people who devote their life to being lefty hate mongers use. "but if you make yourselves sheep, the wolves will eat you." Benjamin Franklin |

This makes no sense. I get what you were trying to go for, but it just fails big time. “A straight man will not go for kids.” - AZDuffman |

Well the model I had to construct it on was deeply flawed. "but if you make yourselves sheep, the wolves will eat you." Benjamin Franklin |

I have mixed feelings on such laws. Gender-affirming care is good. But, I agree with the surgery bans for minors, they should not happen before 18. Though, I do agree that the right-wing is not formulating these laws out of any scientific basis, and are just letting their hate consume them. Complete strangers rule everything that every family does, that is what it means to live in a Republic. Many restrictions are placed on what families can do to their minor children under their dependency. Most of these are positive, because otherwise many kids would grow up in nonstop abuse. The people who believe in physical punishments for kids use almost the same line. Heck, any law or regulation that is exists is a complete stranger telling you how to live, that is just how society works. You can't use this argument only when the rule is one that you do not like. |

There are a bunch of shots kids are given at birth and (at least here in NYS) you can’t opt out for your child. Do you think the state should be able to override parents’ choices to not want their baby inoculated? I’m happy for the state to protect children from reckless parents. You may not think allowing your 16 year old son to have his penis and testicles removed is reckless, but can you at least understand why most of society would? |

Here’s where I think the difference is. Let’s take female circumcision. Is female circumcision decision based on long consultation, or any proof at all their are more benefits than negatives, or any medically trained professionals that find it is a positive? Does the kid normally agree to female circumcision. Has the kid asked for it? Has the kid waited over a year to have it done and still wants it? Is it done by medically trained professionals? I might be for female circumcising, if it had all similar supporting criteria. Am I really being irresponsible not stepping in for the child and parents based on my own ignorance of the individual situation. Maybe some think so, but not me. Or teaching him paragliding with a lawnmower engine and homemade skeleton frame.. I don’t necessarily consider that responsible or risk free either for kids. I’m not so sure. You can stop me from allowing my child to ride in a car without a seatbelt. You can stop me from allowing my child to play video poker in my local casino. Or allowing him to smoke cigarettes. Etc…. Exactly what is allowed by law is I’m sure constantly changing. In general, I’m for the government protecting kids from bad parents. But of course it is quite nuanced often. |
