I hope it's clear there is little reason to blame Hoover for whatever California was doing. The federal government didn't jump into every state affair in those days like they do now, for one thing.

As far as bigotry, Hoover was no worse than FDR or hardly any body else at the time holding office. As far as it goes with me, I'd say there should be little reason for anybody to waste energy defending Hoover these days, so I started joking with the 'all in the family' song bit. Unfortunately the Dems still feel it's important to denigrate Hoover lest anyone forget how much blame he got in those times and not remember he was a Republican. So here we are.

If you are going to college today, though, you'll pick up the Marxist spin on all this. Going back to the cited history dot com article upthread, I give you the author, Ms Becky Little, fresh out of college no doubt

I don't want to waste time on it today, but after thinking about it, there is something wrong with the story about Mexicans, some being US citizens, getting booted out of the country in great numbers. If this was unusual, Mexico would have been unprepared for this, and journalists like Miss Little could go visit the mass graves left by "millions" dumped across the border without means of support and who would have proceeded to die like flies.

Of course they knew their status was shaky in CA. As far as being citizens, I would have to think they were a special class ... 'undocumented citizens' . Who knows what to think about that. These people weren't stupid, if they could flash around a birth certificate , you don't think they would have?
