The GOP’s attempted power grab goes down in flames, and Ohio voters resoundingly reject Issue 1.

I am happy to see that even republicans are not sticking to party lines on abortion.

What concerns me is that more than 40% of Ohio voters cast their ballots in favor of the people having LESS direct control over their government.

Also, can someone explain to me how the Republican Party is the party of freedom, again? I must be missing it since Ohio Republicans, evidently, are not in favor of majority rule for the state.

My theory is "God's will" is more important than Democracy for some of them. So it's "just right" and can't be argued against.

Having grown up in Ohio, I don't disagree with that at all. When it comes to religious fervency, those people are probably equally as dumb as people in The South. Do you know I once convinced a Baptist that Ohio was in the Confederacy just because I thought it would be hilarious when he went around trying to convince his friends of same? I'd have to say I did make a compelling case, though that's not hard, when the target has never opened a book.

I just think this is crazy. Imagine if it had been the other way around and Constitutional Amendment state ballot issues already required a 60% public vote, the new measure would reduce that requirement to 50%...and it would have failed.

These Evangelicals are so indoctrinated and just mentally gone that they will vote against their own freedoms because their masters told them to do so.

Constitutions of any organization should never be able to be changed by simple majority. This fact is recognized in the rules for registered societies in most jurisdictions where the societies must have 60% or even 66% to change their constitution.

The Constitution of the State of Ohio was initially ratified by less than 60% of the vote. How do the heels of those boots taste? Do they at least allow you to put BBQ sauce on them?

This was a proxy vote for abortion rights because there will be an abortion amendment on the ballot this November. The Yes on 1 people were basically just the pro-life coalition. They were desperately trying to prevent the pro-choice majority from being able to have their way.

It. Does. Not. Matter.

What matters is that more than 40%+ of the citizens voted to strip themselves of their own check on the state Government. The Republicans already have a supermajority in both bodies of Congress, the Governor's Mansion AND the Supreme Court.

I promise you. It does not end with the abortion ballot measure failing.

That's why I call them bootlickers. They are so blind and beholden to their overlords that 40%+ of them (which is almost certainly a huge percentage of Republicans) would vote to strip themselves of their own freedoms---someone need only tell them to do so. If that's not bootlicking, I don't know what the word means.

I get what you're saying. This was about SO much more than abortion, though. This was about the fundamental ability to act as a check on your own Government, and 40% of the people said, "No, I don't want that. The Government should make it harder for me to influence it."

Yes, because if a constitution can be changed by simple majority it is a road to tyranny.
