"Popular opinion?" The normally cowed Russians are finally questioning Vlad: not good for Vlad. |

I'm not saying its actual popular opinion, but you of all people know how it goes in such regimes, drawn out wars are looked at as popular. They will also need to cease with some sense of "victory". Russia is like anywhere else lots of people support Vlad and lots of people oppose him (but this group gets silenced for some odd reason). |

It does seem that the Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine do not like anything about it, or so media reports say. |

Exactly, but popular with the soldiers is very different from popular with State media. Ukraine has never been popular with the soldiers, this is why it has been a disaster since day 1. Nobody wants to risk their life for a conflict that they deem morally wrong, even if its objectively safer than being involved in something morally right with a high risk (say D-Day). Russia is forcing people to be there as well, which is even worse for morale. |

Russia has been prosecuting conflicts pretty much the same way for quite a while now. It's just never been as high profile. "Trumpsplain (def.) explaining absolute nonsense said by TRUMP. |

The difference is today everybody has a camera with them at all times and access to social media most times. The word gets out quicker and pictures are the clincher. At my age a Life In Prison sentence is not much of a deterrent. |

Illegal Aliens who are male (over 18) do have to register to Selective Service. This is obviously not enforced and rarely considered during immigration hearings. But, technically any male who is living inside the U.S. as their only home has to register. There used to be a program in the Army that you could join as an immigrant and get expedited citizenship (I don't know the details). But, Trump got rid of it in 2017 or 2018, and it certainly was damaging to recruitment. There were people in for years who never even went to basic training because they were basically stuck in limbo (and ironically many of these are better qualified than American recruits, because they often had advanced degrees and were just trying to get citizenship). |
