But I tend to doubt they even had many "hotels" at the time.

If there were any at all. And who
travels with a 9 month pregnant
woman. The inn story is hogwash,
as is them traveling at all. As is
her being a virgin. Just made up
nonsense added much later to
fill in the gaps of the narrative.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

So much Christmas hostility. Why didn't you have the same reaction in my Hanukkah quiz?

Speaking for myself, I am able to appreciate the basics of each religion without having to believe in the miracle stories.

All religions were invented to control
people. Same as why every gov't was
invented. Look at the huge control
the Church had over movies and TV
right up till the late 60's. Prior to
1968 every crime committed on TV
or in a movie had to be punished
before it ended. This was the Church
giving us the fantasy that no crime
goes unpunished, when in reality
most crimes go unsolved, let alone
unpunished.

The Thomas Crown Affair was the
first movie where the criminal got
away. MASH the movie was the
first time the F word was used. I
remember it vividly, it hit me like
a bolt of lightening in the theater.
That was the end of the Vatican's
influence over media, they've
been limp wristed non players
ever since.

I'm not going to further hijack the thread by responding.

I look forward to FrG's answers.

Merry Christmas everyone! Following the lead of the Wiz here is a few trivia questions for ya:

1. What does the name Bethlehem mean?

In Aramaic it means, "House of Bread", in Arabic I think it means, "House of meat". Very interesting when you think about the Eucharist and its connection to where Jesus was born.

Quote:
2. From which house or tribe of Israel do the prophets Nathan, Isaiah, and others say the Messiah will come from?

The House of David from the Tribe of Judah.

Quote:
3. What does the Immaculate Conception refer to?

It refers to the birth of Mary, not Jesus.

Quote:
4. Who is the forerunner of Jesus and whose prophetic spirit is he said to have?

John the Baptist and the spirit of Elijah

Quote:
5. Was Jesus' place of birth a cave or a manger?

Both. Most archaeologists point out that people in that area and in that time lived in caves with an upper room for the family and the ground floor for the animals. The word translated as "inn" in the Scriptures is the same word used for "upper room". Bethlehem most likely did not have any commercial inns as we think of them and the Scriptures was pointing out that no one had room for them in the family part of their dwelling so that had to give birth in the stable or manger part with the animals.

6. How long is the Christmas season? What is the end of the Christmas season?

There is a Christmas Octave for 8 days, 12 days before the Feast of the Epiphany, but the Christmas season actually goes to the Sunday celebrating the Baptism of Jesus. (This is of course in the Catholic Tradition)

Quote:
7. What special Feast Days are celebrated the three days immediately after Christmas?

St. Stephen the first martyr, St. John the Evangelist, and the Holy Innocents.

Quote:
8. What is the first Sunday after Christmas called?

Holy Family Sunday.

Quote:
9. What are the three gifts the Magi bring and what are their significance?

Gold, for His Kingship. Frankincense, for His divinity. Myrrh, for His passion and suffering.

Quote:
10. Who are Mary's parents?

Jochim and Anne

Quote:
11. What does Emmanuel mean?

"God with us"

Quote:
12. Which prophet predicts a Virgin birth?

Isaiah.
“It is with the smallest brushes that the artist paints the most exquisitely beautiful pictures.” (

Is "Holy Family Sunday" a new name? Because I absolutely remember it being about Mary and celebrating her as the mother of Jesus.

I mean, I am talking "phone a friend" certain. Or I thought.

Pope Leo XIII (Born 2 March, 1810, at Carpineto; elected pope 20 February, 1878; died 20 July, 1903, at Rome.) created the feast.

AZ, you are thinking of January 1st, the Feast of Mary, Mother of God.

OK, I did misread the question I guess.

May I get some kind of credit for knowing what the week after was?
