Why would it possibly be good for America? Now the US will burn Arab oil rather than N. American oil. "but if you make yourselves sheep, the wolves will eat you." Benjamin Franklin |

Beautiful country I'm travelling around it and enjoying it I'd rather pay more for gas and get rid of that leaky environmental disaster Sometimes we live no particular way but our own - Grateful Dead "Eyes of the World" |

You fell for that lie completely didn't you. You would sooner have 84 million gallons in a super tanker end up in the ocean. NIMBY "but if you make yourselves sheep, the wolves will eat you." Benjamin Franklin |

The good news for me is that I don't care about the long-term condition of the environment. That said, I do understand the environment well-enough to know that it is one thing that doesn't stop at our borders. "War is the remedy that our enemies have chosen..let us give them all they want." Me either. Live one day at a time. At my age a Life In Prison sentence is not much of a deterrent. |

It seems pragmatic to limit my thinking to my chronological limitations. "War is the remedy that our enemies have chosen..let us give them all they want." William T. Sherman |

| missedhervee Member since: Apr 23, 2021 Threads: 160 Posts: 5497 | Pragmatic perhaps, but is it desirable to limit the scope of your concern to your lifetime only? Were that so why then would people put so much effort into reproducing and trying to ensure that their offspring survive and if possible flourish? Isn't "the meaning of life" to reproduce and ensure the survival of your offspring? It's good for the ego too as it gives people a sort of hedge against death and dying, the idea being that "a part of them" can continue to live on after they perish. A single person can probably get away with harboring your attitude but a good parent will work for and be concerned about both the present and the future. |

Reproduction is closer to instinct among all forms of life, but I'm not sure if such is also the meaning. Look at the computerized characters in a game. Is what they do in the game the meaning, or is the meaning that the guy playing the game is entertained by watching or manipulating them or their environment? Seems to me that the question is very personal and applies only to the person asking the question: "What is the meaning of MY life?" In other words, the questioner is asking "Is there any real purpose to my life, and if not, why shouldn't I pull a Hemingway and just blow my head off?" I've read lots of philosophy and have concluded there's no absolute answer, other than what I've stated, and even that is debatable. |
