Ahhhh... The doctors sought him out,

Their propaganda sought him
out. And every time he saw his
doc another battery of tests
were ordered. As long as he had
good insurance he was tested
for everything over and over.
His daughters got tired of taking
him in for the tests, but the dad
was in the claws of the system
now, to him there was no choice.

If he'd had no insurance and didn't
have 3/4 of a million in disposable
property it would have been an
entirely different story. And nobody
believes any of the money spent
kept him alive one day longer than
if it hadn't been squandered on
Mercedes payments.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

Ahhhh... The doctors sought him out, gave him treatment options against his will to keep him alive..... Somehow he was teleported to that $7,000 a month care facility.... couldn't have gone there on purpose?
Of course not! There were tons of papers to fill out to get into the $7,000 a month place, trust me, as when someone APPLIES to get into one, their finances are checked first. So your F in Law made a conscious decision to go there.... NO ONE FORCED him!
"Took" every penny he had? That's like saying I went to a car dealer, bought a car for $50k, and they 'took' my $50k!

So what do you propose, Bob? I propose letting him stay at home for as long as he and his loved ones want, but I also propose there being a $7,000 a month place that he can choose to go into if he wants. Sounds like what I propose is what happened.

As far as quality of life past 80..... I do agree with you.... I know many people who have a quality of life I would not want, but, happily, I also know quite a few that are happy octo and nonogenarians.
In the interest of full disclosure, SooPoo is invested in geriatric REIT's. : )

Yeah.... No! For whatever it is worth, as an anesthesiologist I never made a dime on Medicare patients. Medicare pays less than 1/3 of what real insurance pays to anesthesiologists, and of course since it is the government you can't do anything about it. But I'll let Bob rail on about those greedy doctors who actually take care of patients that seek them out.

Doctors are just like cops, they'll
defend one of their own till the
cows come home. Even if the guy
is dirty. Try and get a doctor to
say a bad thing about another
doctor.

I only heard it once. In the early
70's my doc went on tirade
about Dr Atkins, saying his low
carb diet was going to kill
thousands and Atkins should
have his license taken away and
he should be flogged in public.
I lost 50 pounds on Atkins and
he fired me as a patient. He was
furious I had disobeyed him.

I thought some time back, you had said your broker put you into some REIT's? Senior housing or something of the sort, that's why I was ribbing you.

Looking at the last 10 years of
my father in laws life, from 85
to 95, it was pathetic. He went
from a hunter and guide in
MT, owning several properties,
to being a victim of the doctors
who kept him barely alive and
took every penny he had. All
the inheritance his kids might
have gotten went to doctors
and a $7000 a month care
facility. In the end he was in a
wheelchair, head on his chest,
and could only whisper answers
to questions. Awful.

Won’t comment on the state of/ethics of your medical system but can absolutely agree re: the quality of life these super old people have. IE none. Why would anyone want to live to that sort of age? It’s a walking advertisement for euthanasia. You don’t let your dog live like that in old age, why would you want to let your relative?

Because people have this misconception that life has value.
At my age a Life In Prison sentence is not much of a deterrent.

I know.... Now that you remind me I am in one that combines senior housing and student housing. The student housing part might be a disaster, as some colleges may not be open this fall. But a very small investment....

Life does have value but the person valuing it should not be the government or anyone except the individual themselves. No one should be telling someone that they can’t end their life once it becomes not worth living.
