UPDATE

Just had meeting with the owner - he wanted to tell me that the co-counsel denied having told both the client and me to "shut-up" while we were in court but that the does not believe him

He then told me he does not want me to leave and asked me if I would still leave even if he insulated me from ever having to work with the protege and co-counsel ever again (I do not think that is possible as things happen day-to-day in a law firm where things need to be done quickly by all hands on deck)

I informed him that that was a noble gesture but I did not see how it could be enforced - he told me to let him worry about that

I also stated commuting 4 hours per day is no longer workable - he asked me why I did not just rent an apartment in Manhattan (as if I just have an extra $3k/month available) - I told him it was not in the budget so he replied that he would "have to just give me a raise" - he asked if I would give him a day to figure it out - out of respect for him I said "Sure" - plus, my notice is already in so it's not as if I told him I was postponing the notice - just going to listen to his pitch

Thoughts...?

Fantastic. I can't think of a better scenario at this point. You have all the leverage.
At my age a Life In Prison sentence is not much of a deterrent.

Be aware that if he gives you enough
of a raise (bribe) that you can move,
the rest of what you don't like will
get even worse. Nothing will change
because he now owns you.

I deal with that all the time. I could never live downstate. I couldn't even take Albany again.

Because so much of your time
is spent doing things you don't
want to be doing. Very little of
my time is spent that way, by
design.

There's a famous quote somewhere
by a guy who said he wasted his
whole life doing what he was supposed
to do, and not what he wanted to do.
I made it a point not to be that guy.

Nope
Your commute. What a waste of time and its a massive amount of time. 20 hours a week wasted.
I go to work, I walk upstairs to my home office
To me, huge quality of life is having lots of personal time to do whatever I want. Thats why I work. Too have tons of personal fun time

To me the thing is how true the line in "Office Space" is when he says his only motivation is not to be hassled. That is what it comes down to. I look at my work life 20 years ago and today. Back then in charge of a fleet of vehicles, many employees, and million dollar plus P&L. All the status someone my age then could ask for.

Today I got none of that. I have to make my office where I can find it. Nobody reports to me save an occasional kid on the crew asking advice, and that is rare, though I don't mind it. Some days I work on a picnic bench.

I would not switch back.

An American consultant was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellowfin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.

The Mexican replied, "Only a little while."

The American then asked, "Why don't you stay out longer and catch more fish?

The Mexican said, "Well, I catch enough to feed my family."

The American then asked, "But what do you do with the rest of your time?"

The Mexican fisherman said, "I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos, I have a full and busy life, senor."

The American scoffed, "I am a Harvard graduate and could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat with the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then LA and eventually NYC where you will run your expanding enterprise."

The Mexican fisherman asked, "But senor, how long will this all take?"

To which the American replied, "15-20 years."

"But what then, senor?"

The American laughed and said, "That's the best part. When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions."

"Millions, senor? Then what?"

The American said, "Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos."
