The Old English words are "wer" as "married man" and was the male counterpart to "wife". Their offspring was called a "ċild".

Old Norse word was "husbondi" literally "master of the house," from hus "house" + bondi "householder" replaced the Old English word in the 12th century.

It's a shame because if we retained the Old English we could have wer-wife, wife-wife, and wer-wer to cover all the relationships.
