I've mainly noticed this only from Canada's central provinces, especially Alberta. In Vancouver, Toronto, or Montreal you will rarely hear an "eh."

He lives above Montana, in Moose Jaw.

Moose Jaw. The perfect name for a mid-western Canadian city. Is it near Medicine Hat?

I was at a hockey game in Buffalo years ago and there was a Canadian near us, kind of guy who was friendly but loud. He ended every sentence with "eh." It was just funny as could be. Canadians can complain about the stereotype, but if he was around they would say "never mind."

My college roommate bought a ranch about 30 miles from there.

There was another town called "Stand Off" that was about the same distance away.

It's the same as saying 'like' or 'ya know'
a lot.

I, like, ran into my, ya know, friend. He said,
like, he was, ya know, upset that his wife,
ya know, left him because he's, like, ya
know, a moron.

I always associated too much of "like" with teenage girls. In Catholic School the teachers really made an effort to pound that habit out of people. "IT'S NOT *LIKE* 'x' IT *IS* 'x.'" Today in public school a teacher correcting a student like that would probably get fired.
