Bad, no. Out of the loop, yes.. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

The linguist as no explanation about how the clip was made. A positive pitch shift makes it clearly sound like "laurel" while a negative pitch shift makes it clearly sound like "yanni". I wonder if when they are making the chipmunk movies if some of the words seem to change to different words. Movie Speed Slowed Down version |

According to the linguist: Plenty of things could be influencing your interpretation of yanny/laurel, including your dialect and whether you listened to the recording over a speaker or headphones. Your daughters grew up thousands of miles from where you grew up. What dialect do you speak, and what dialect do your daughters speak? ![]() What is critical to the game is that the actual phrase is not someone speaking a word. It is created artificially and people are choosing the word ( or near word) that best approximates what they hear. Unfortunately, the player reads a choice of two pseudo-words before they listen to the clip. If you weren't primed to make a choice, it is possible some people would hear something else entirely. |
