Tom Wolfe passed away
I was a fan
I loved the book, The Right Stuff. So much better then the movie

My personal favorite was "From Bauhaus to Our House" for it's brilliant perspective on both modern architecture and the ideology behind it. I would recommend reading it along with The Fountainhead, a 1943 novel by Russian-American author Ayn Rand.

His first novel was fantastic, The Bonfire of the Vanities, published in 1987. It was considered the perfect story for a movie, as it was so vivid that reading the book, you could practically visualize the characters. The hardcover book 725,000 copies at $19.95 each (and that was 30 years ago) and the paperback sold 2.3 million copies by the time the movie came out. As books are reasonably read by more than one person, perhaps 6-10 million people read the book in the three years before the movie came out.

The movie sold 3.72 million tickets, was ranked #77 that year, and is often considered one of the worst adaptations of all time.

He has suffered from depression for a long time. I also was a big fan and thought he was a great writer. Brought food related shows to a new level even though they were often more like travel shows.

I'm sorry to hear about him and Kate Spade. It would not surprise me if celebrities suffer from depression more than the population in general. A way of coping with depression is constant stimulation to keep your mind off of it, which the life in the spotlight provides. However, eventually your fame and career reach a zenith. When you feel you've climbed that mountain your mind loses focus and you start slipping into the abyss. Of course, I don't know these people. Just a theory. Yep. Carry one with what you were doing.

I have followed his articles from time to time over the decades. I just read his wiki page and was surprised to hear he was paralyzed from the neck down. He accomplished a lot despite his disability.
