No. "A surveyor for the OK Oil Company realizes the size of the oil field, and the company pays him a fortune for the right to drill on his land. Patriarch Jed's cousin Pearl Bodine prods him to move to California after being told his modest property could yield $25 million." They initially had $10mil, and it grew to $25mil around season 3-4. I said 10 mil is a joke now because nobody can buy a mansion like that in Beverly Hills and live like a king for 10 million. Just the upkeep and taxes would kill you, let alone the buying price. The mansion itself was sold in 1945 for $250K. In the series, Jeb paid $1mil. In reality it was rented for the show for $500 a day, all 21,000 sq ft of it. Today it's worth $37mil. In 1997 $20mil. So Jeb would hardly have paid $10mil for it 35 years before that. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

Wizard Administrator Member since: Oct 23, 2012 Threads: 239 Posts: 6095 | It is nice to be able to say for once that a sitcom was before my time. I will admit I saw the Beverly Hillbillies in returns in flipping through the channels but never got into it. I probably was a snob about insisting on shows in color. No wait, I will confess to liking Green Acres. It is only because it was always on in the waiting room of my dentist as a kid and that got me hooked. The things I remember. Now I have to do the math each time if anyone asks me how old my kids are. Knowledge is Good -- Emil Faber |

My wife is from Fresno, and whenever we pass the McDonalds at the corner of Blackstone Ave & Shield Ave, she would mention that it'd been there since July 1955. As an OSU alumni, I was shocked in 2007 when Wendy's closed down the very first Wendy's location. This is a company which last year made $314 million in operating profit on $1.4 billion in revenue, and the greedy bean-counters closed down the original Wendy's because sales were low on weekends. |

The last 8 years of BH was in color. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

Never eaten at Wendys and got no plans. Ditto for Jack in a Box, Hardee's, and most other FF joints. BK, KFC, McD, Taco Bell, that's pretty much it. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

The show came on the air in 1962, with oil then about $2.85/bbl. At a standard 1/8 ORRI (over riding royalty interest) that gave Jeb $0.36 per bbl. To get $10MM that means Jeb's land had to pump 27,777,777 bbl of oil at this price. This is assuming he got no bonus payment on the lease. Even if his grandfather got a full 160 acre quarter-section and he got $5,000 per acre, which is in itself almost impossible, that is $5,000 x 160 = $800,000. Lets round that to $1MM. He still needs an even 25 million bbl to get his $10MM. In 1962, Saudi Arabia produced 1.6MM bpd. So to believe Jeb even had $10MM you have to assume his land somehow produced as much oil as Saudi Arabia did in 2 weeks, the entire country. Or put another way, the USA produced 7MM bpd at the same time, Jebs field would have been 4 days of USA oil production, or 1% of total production for the entire USA in a year. Do youse own math for the $25MM figure. The President is a fink. |
