When I was a kid, in the 70's, everybody predicted that energy would be practically free in the near future. They sure got that one wrong.

Maybe they said that to make us feel better about waiting in lines around the block to get gas? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1973_oil_crisis

I thought it was nuclear that would make energy nearly free?

One problem with nuclear is vulnerability and cost of replacement. One accurately aimed modern missile and it's out for years with amounts of risk to inhabitants for surrounding area likely..

1 billion $ or more likely more to put back in action.

Take out a whole field of solar windmills and you're back in business as soon as you can get replacements or needed parts.

I don't remember practically free. The phrase "too cheap to meter" goes back to 1954.

Three Mile Island was commissioned on September 2, 1974. I do remember we studied in college how unlikely it was that a meltdown would happen, and they took us on a tour of a nuclear power plant. All those reports would say that a meltdown was a hundred times less likely than being struck by lightning, etc.

Next to no chance of a missile strike, though.

And World War 1 was suppose to be the last great war.

"War to end all wars."

In 1990 people thought we were at the "end of history" and would have a lasting peace dividend, not needing a military. That did not even last the year!

WWI, the pre-war. We let Germany
catch it's breath for the main event.
No way I believe they wouldn't do
it again if given the chance. It's in
their nature and culture.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

Not just their nature and culture, it is geography. Germany is stuck on the European Plain, hard to defend. If the USA had not stepped in to make Euro nations play nice, they by now would have been forced to dominate France and Poland as buffer states. They would have eventually dominated Poland and Russia, with autobahns to Moscow and Russia sending raw materials to feed German factories.
