So 50/4 is 12.5 so it follows that 49/4 is less than 50/4 by 1/4 or 12.25
That's a leap I can't seem to make. My brain stops at the 'near 12.5' point.

See if this can help your brain see it. 50/4 can also be expressed and 50 quarters. Likewise 49/4 is 49 quarters. 50 minus 49 = 1 So you have 1 less quarter than the 12.5 that 50/4 simplified to. 12.50 - .25 = 12.25

Or similarly looking at 49 quarters: 40 quarters is $10, 48 quarters is $12, so 49 quarters is $12 plus one quarter. Hence 49/4=12.25

Some people just have really good ability to see questions in different ways. It's like find the next two letters in the following sequence

O T T F F S S _ _

Most people can't figure this out, but I've seen one girl answer the question before I could even finish asking the question.

Mind you, setting and solving this type of thing is part of what I do for a living.

For 49/4, I went: well, 48 is the closest multiple of 4, and it's one away, so it's 12 4's and a quarter of 1, so that's 12 and 1/4. That's 12.25. None of this going 50, marlarkey.

A view into what may very well be the curse of my life...

I felt a pattern. It felt like numbers. I tried different things. Got to this...

0 T T F F S S _ _

02 - 24 - 46 - 68 - 8

0T - TF - FS - SE - E

When it comes to numbers, I lose the ability to check my own work, or look at it a different way. I'm just happy I find anything that sort of works. Once shown I get it, but it saddens me that "getting it" amounts to nothing more than realizing "zero" doesn't start with a GD "O" =p

I honestly believe some of this is just practice. I got real good at doing IQ tests at one point. I do a monthly puzzle night called "Puzzled Pint" that also means I spend a time trying out creative/deductive puzzles. And I slowly get better at them. Because I like doing them. If numbers annoy you enough, you'll never have the desire to do more work with them, even if you know you could/should.

For example at 40, I could learn to skate. I just find it really hard whenever I've tried, and don't have the desire to go through the tough work needed to get to a level of competency.

Your Maths is far better than my skating, by the way. :)

I haven't gone ice skating since about 1992. I assume if I wanted to go skating now, I'd still know how.

That would be an interesting thing to test.

Well you got it correct. I am curious how long it took you.
