the observable universe can help us make educated statements about this spiritual dimension.

Yes. Like bathing is evil, it leads to pride. The earth is
flat. The earth is the center of the universe. Evolution
is 100% wrong. Disease is caused by Satan and his
minions. Contraception is wrong. Stem cell research
is wrong. And now the Pope has endorsed Global
Warming, the biggest hoax ever perpetrated on
the world. The Church seems to suck at guessing.

Even Bob uses observable evidence that he likes to twist around a bit and say it points to the spiritual idea of reincarnation.

The researchers themselves say it. Ian
Stephenson says it. He said the research
doesn't prove reincarnation, but the
empirical evidence certainly points in
that direction. Just what Galileo said
about his theory.

I think we should clarify what we trying to justify. I'm talking about a creator or creating force, be it the flying spaghetti monster or a divine clockmaker. What I am saying is that by human reason alone aided by the gift of science a thinking person can and should reach the conclusion that there is a creator of some kind. Who and what this creator "god" is becomes a question for theology, aided by credible revelation and other evidence.

The natural world is part of a larger spiritual world and through what we observe and learn from science we can learn some things about things we cannot see.

I think the best all-time alternate history with time travel story would involve infiltrating the early church apologists and teaching them Aristotle. Even better, teach them science. Best of all, expunge Plato from their minds (hmm, so K and J and a worm take a neutralizer and a time machine....)

Too bad I'd never write it.

I always debate even answering your often inane and incorrect statements first because you don't really listen and secondly because they may take us too far afield and end up alienating the other posters on this thread. Nevertheless I can't seem to correct a few things here.

Absolutely ridiculous and has never been taught.

It is amazing how early most people knew the Earth was round, anyway I am convinced you know little more than myths surrounding the Galileo case.

Quote:
Evolution is 100% wrong.

The Church certainly doesn't teach this.

Quote:
Disease is caused by Satan and his

An idea refuted by Jesus Himself.

Quote:
Contraception is wrong.

Look at the divorce rate, infidelity, prevalence of pornography, unwanted pregnancies, and abortions since contraception. Not to mention the serious concerns about the safety of the pill.

Quote:
Stem cell research is wrong.

Only that which destroys a human embryo. Adult stem cells, which are the only kind that has every helped a human being, or stem cells obtained from many other sources or techniques are encouraged by the Church.

It seems pretty clear that we have to care for this beautiful Earth God gave us. The Pope is addressing not global warming per se but respect for the environment as a pro-life issue.

I appreciate your attempt to be cute, but even atheists could study theology as it is the study of God an how we perceive God.

Seriously, that would be like a department of Star Trek studies in a university.

Quote:
As you know this makes a big difference in the culture, politics, and society of a people.

Yes, it does. But such studies fall into other categories: philosophy, politics, psychology, sociology, etc. Star Trek, too, has had a great deal of influence on society (mostly in America), from the cultish fandom to people who go into science or the military because of it. This, too, may be worthy of study. But a Trek studies department would be too much.

If this trikes you as flippant, then let me make another example: ideologies can have a great deal of influence on culture, politics, societies, etc. We study ideologies in philosophy, history and politics, not in a separate discipline.

You're better off saying that you believe what you believe.

I'm reminded of a not-so-good Futurama episode. At one point the gang confronts a superstitious robot. While the Professor does his best to disprove the robot's points, he winds up saying defiantly "I choose to believe what I was programmed to believe!"

I never said the Church taught any of it.
But it's certainly ideas the Church held
at one time, and these ideas had a big
influence on it.

Here we go again. Based on what? Why go
looking for something there is no evidence
of? Science did go looking for god when
it studied prayer groups. The first was
in 1888, and every one since then has
found the same thing. Prayer seems to
have no real world effect on anything.
It's a vast waste of time.

God has a great sales force, unfortunately
there's no product to sell. It's the Music Man
selling his imaginary band to the true
believers.

So you would believe in and love God only if it was shown that he would answer prayers on your whim and become your personal genie?
