Heard a commentator say there would have been a really loud cockpit voice warning going off in the cockpit (of altitude or ground approaching, not sure which)

The pilot trying to break in must of been well aware at some point what was going to happen.

Anyway, we know that people on the rest of the plane were still conscious.

GPWS Ground Proximity Warning System: Terrain, Terrain, PUll up Pull up. would sound near the end of the flight

More puzzled ... no instruments descent was shallow.

>Anyway, we know that people on the rest of the plane were still conscious.
Probably.

When one pilot leaves the cockpit the PF is supposed to go on oxygen. What if that is when he found out the oxygen was only air or was something else?

One good question is if this pilot is in a suicidal murderous depression, are we to presume that he was flying around for a week on 90 minute flights waiting until his pilot had to pee and leave the cabin. I am sure it would be unusual to get up on such a short flight.

Unusual perhaps but not unlikely to take place. Impulse perhaps? He could always have incapacitated the pilot.

Low cost carrier means low salaries. but not serfdom.

Recent failure?

The description this morning said the actions don't exactly fit suicide or terror whatever that means.

Uh. Well, I had a theory aircrew were being slipped a designer drug. They certainly can cause bizarre behavior sometimes. Someone at the lunch counter.
That would go under terror.

There have been two cases of a pilot and steward both losing it on a plane in the last year or two. I never did see an explanation for either of those.

Attacking airline crew in some manner before boarding is about the only way left to easily get at bringing a plane down and be undetectable.

Conspiracy theory for the day.

A mind afflicted by depression and perhaps stressed in some way swill not act reasonably, even while retaining the capacity to reason.

For instance.

Quote:

The mystery of Le Pain Maudit (Cursed Bread) still haunts the inhabitants of Pont-Saint-Esprit, in the Gard, southeast France.

On August 16, 1951, the inhabitants were suddenly racked with frightful hallucinations of terrifying beasts and fire.

One man tried to drown himself, screaming that his belly was being eaten by snakes. An 11-year-old tried to strangle his grandmother. Another man shouted: "I am a plane", before jumping out of a second-floor window, breaking his legs. He then got up and carried on for 50 yards. Another saw his heart escaping through his feet and begged a doctor to put it back. Many were taken to the local asylum in strait jackets

Time magazine wrote at the time: "Among the stricken, delirium rose: patients thrashed wildly on their beds, screaming that red flowers were blossoming from their bodies, that their heads had turned to molten lead."

Eventually, it was determined that the best-known local baker had unwittingly contaminated his flour with ergot, a hallucinogenic mould that infects rye grain. Another theory was the bread had been poisoned with organic mercury.

Maybe the person in the cockpit had a heart attack or stroke while locked inside? I wonder if that's something they could figure out in a autopsy from tiny body parts? Seems like that would be difficult to determine.

After 9/11, there were proposals to install remote overrides that would allow an operator on the ground to take control of the plane. While I can see a lot of problems with a system like this, there has got to be a better solution than allowing 149 innocent folks to die because a nut job locks himself in the cockpit.
