Quote:
Earlier this week, Epic Games announced that WETA Digital had created a VR experience for The Hobbit. This collaboration is called "Thief in the Shadows", and was the combined efforts of Epic Games, WETA Digital, NVIDIA, and Oculus, and it'd bring the wearer to the Lonely Mountain, put in place of Bilbo Baggins as he (the wearer of the Oculus VR headset) encounters the dragon Smaug for the first time. Oh, Stupendous One, how awesome it is to look upon your face from such a realistic perspective.

Smaug passed overhead, creating a rush of a feeling that, unless you were deaf and blind, your body absolutely could not ignore.

I know dragons aren't real. I knew this experience wasn't real. But when a full-sized Smaug came suddenly overhead, my senses reacted - my body lurched.

I gasped in spite of myself.

Anyway, what do you want to see in VR?

(other than actionable porn -- 'cause I can guess that might be popular)

The interesting thing about VR, is not only can you bring realities like extreme skiing, or underwater cave exploration to someone's living room in all it's sheer virtual reality, but potential physics and realities that don't exist can be brought, like having x-ray vision, or walking upside down on ceilings -- whatever can be thought up.

I haven't bought into the Rift yet. I typically lag way, way behind in new tech. Gaming has taught me that the first in are first screwed. What all these first-in people are doing is paying a premium to be a beta tester. I see it time and time again. Doesn't matter if it's hardware, a peripheral, software, a server... first-ins get screwed Every. Single. Time. Just look at any forum for any large release, go to the first page, and LOL at the rage. It is a given.

So I wait. Let them rage. I might come in behind the 8 ball because I'm inexperienced and a lower level, but I got my game less than half priced and most of the bugs and haxxors have been sorted.

Porn has been done. I saw already a humor site showing porn to olds via the Rift. I can't say I'd ever use it for that. Don't even have a desire to just "check it out".

What I'm keen on is sim use. One of the most difficult things in sim is situational awareness, whether in flight combat or auto racing. Using arrow keys is near impossible when in action, and it just gives snap-left, snap-right viewing, which is disorienting. My next big move is a triple screen setup, but even that is limited. It will be a revelation to just look left and "see" left, and I'm certainly looking forward to it.

But not now, and not soon. I'm not even gonna consider it until they get it fully sorted and maintain stability for a year. After that, it's just a matter of justification. Between the gaming rig, the HOTAS, the wheel / pedals / shifter, I've already got more than one man really needs. And as someone who still plays plenty on PS1 and even break out the NES now and again, I've certainly no urge to be on the cutting edge.

Just bought an Xbox one
I always wait a few years before buying the latest console.
I'm cheap that way. Wait for the price drop and used ones on the market.
Tried out the latest version of Doom
Hated it
Not the Doom I grew up with
You have to do these BS in close glory kills for health. I like sniping.
Traded it in for Fallout 4
Wow
What a game
Just a huge massive sandbox to play in with a sci-fi narrative
I love saving anytime instead of checkpoints
Can adjust difficulty on the fly. Now that is cool and really helps you enjoy the game
Tons of exploring, killing and collecting :-)

Have you never heard of or played Borderlands?

Sniping, quasi-RPG FPS, and maaaaaad loot. There's something like 2.2 MILLION different guns that can be looted from chests, the scenery, and mobs. Plus the art is top notch, and the humor is quite good as well.

If you've never heard of it, it is a MUST BUY. You can prolly get the GOTY Edition with all the DLC for like $20 nowadays.

The Fallout series is great because it's real places and features real world stuff. The story is usually pretty good as well, but damn, they've all been pretty buggy. When I played New Vegas I didn't even make out of Primm, so like lvl5 or so, before I found a dialog glitch that allowed me infinite XP. And I'm a cheap bastard like you, so the game had already been out for nearly a year when I found it. Bug city, the lot of them. Still fun, but...

Just check Borderlands out. Great value for money, and a pretty high replay factor, too. In fact, you have to beat it twice to beat it once =)

Yes
I absolutely hate checkpoint games
Its also hard.
I die, I have to start all the way back at the last checkpoint
Now I'm playing a small portion over and over
Eventually I give up

Fallout 4 I can save instantly, no checkpoints
Say I have a tough fight against 5, I simply save after 1st kill, save after 2nd killed ect till all are killed
If I die trying to kill 5th person, I only have 1 person to kill due to saves
Boderlands, I kill 4, die on number 5, gotta go through the motions of killing all 5 again. ugh. No thanks

Ugh. Filthy casual ;)

Just curious, when did you get into gaming? I remember there being a reason I was hesitant on Borderlands and you flipped the switch for me; it was one nigh impossible boss fight that made me, of course, have to start all over again (This was in B2, fighting...bah, some giant robot thing. SO AGGRAVATING!!1!) But anyway...

I started thinking to back in the day and realizing just how bloody hard so many games were. I got on a nostalgia kick and dove back into Genesis and NES titles a while ago and Holy F#$%! Some of those are so, so, sooo hard. I couldn't even get passed the second level of Altered Beast after 40 quarters' worth of tries. And your comment about insta-save brought me back to the original Resident Evil. Such horrible character controls and not only were the save points light years from each other, they required a pretty rare item for the save point to function. Or perhaps my epic Final Fantasy VII run where I tried to beat it in one sitting and died somewhere in my 28th hour having never went to a save point. Talk about starting over. I lost a controller to that debacle ><

Given that, something like BL where I don't even need do anything but run passed a certain point and the save happens all on its own without delay is mana from heaven in relation. I like insta-save from a convenience standpoint; especially being a single dad it's nice to be able to "just stop" and not lose anything. But I still have a draw towards those harder games because it feels more an accomplishment.

Just wondering your history so I can understand your stance =)

I missed Doom. I can't figure out why. I know I entered that genre with Duke Nukem, and Duke predates Doom. But for some reason, I totally missed that boat. Probably cuz I was 12 when it came out lol. I don't think I've EVER played it =/

Civ I just recently got into ('13 or so). Reckon I was too busy with Age of Empires and never moved into another RTS. I do like AoE better, but Civ filled the hole left by AoE's demise quite nicely. I'm actually playing V right now on my new dual screen set up =)

Mario Kart was THE BOMB lol. Think that was 8th grade when the first one came out, just sublime. So many late nights. That and the version on N64. So many 4 man tourneys in the common room at college. Night after night after night, only broken by 4 man Goldeneye tourneys. GOAT pair, right there.

I never did get into Bioshock. One of my very best friends was mad for it; I eventually tried it I think just as 3 was coming out. It's weird; I thought it was lovely to look at, had good controls, no jagged scenes or gameplay that ruined the immersion, and the skills and abilities weren't bad. But something about it... not one thing ever sunk its teeth into me. At the end I found I had played it just to play it, and sitting here thinking, Big Daddy is the single thing I can remember about it =/

I dunno. Looking for something different. I was mad for JRPG's, but they've all moved on and it's just not the same. I can't stand FPS like Call of Duty anymore, and Fallout's sort of worn out for me, too. And after Skyrim, I'm not sure if I can take another in the Elder Scrolls series lol. My last big urge was in simulations, but both of them are just so damn much work.

I need a new fix.

Doom FPS came out before Duke Nukem FPS
I loved Duke Nukem
My favorite all time favorite FPS is Half Life. Another game I have almost finished
Civilization, I have finished this game many times but I can only win with science and building a rocket ship. I can never win taking over the world, too hard.
Need a new fix, Mario Kart 8 on Wii U
Every new version of Mario kart left some great tracks alone and added new ones
Mario Kart 8 Wii U, every single track is upgraded. Incredible. Its like playing 24 brand new tracks
Only thing that sucks is game choices for Wii U is lacking
