Was Jesus God?

I've been asking this question for 40
years, and reading about for that long.
I have never gotten a satisfactory answer.
All I hear sounds like gobblygook nonsense
about mans nature and gods nature, and
blah this and blah blah that.

I'm convinced nobody knows what they're
talking about when they say god 'sacrificed'
something on the cross. If god was Jesus
and Jesus was god, it's a wash. And a fictional
one at that.

I think you do understand at least the basics of Christianity that Jesus sacrificed His life

The myth says god impregnated Mary and
and god was born as a man. From the very
first breath he took, the sacrifice was
technically over. He was a dead man, all
men die. So what does it matter how he
died, on a cross, or getting kicked in the
head by a camel. Either way he's dead and
the sacrifice is made. The cross seems to
be a lot of uneeded drama added to the
myth to spice it up a little. Jesus could
have fallen and hit his head and died,
the whole point was a god being born
and dying as a human. Right?

I just found something new. Christian Atheism.

"Christian atheism is a theological position in which the belief in the God of Christianity is rejected or absent, but the moral teachings of Jesus are followed..
Jesus, although not seen as divine, is still a central feature of Christian atheism. Most Christian atheists think of Jesus as a wise and good man, accepting his moral teachings but rejecting the idea of his divinity. Hamilton said that to the Christian atheist, Jesus is not really the foundation of faith; instead he is a "place to be, a standpoint". Christian atheists look to Jesus as an example of what a Christian should be, but they do not see him as God."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_atheism

"Jesus was a guru, who believed himself to be God in the sense that everything is divine."

I can get behind this, it's what I have always
thought Jesus was saying. Everybody is the
son of god, in a spiritual sense. We are all
connected.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

Sounds like a decent first step.

Why doesn't it bother Xtions that the god
they worship and pray to, the god that is
embodied in Jesus, is the exact same god
giving the marching orders to Muslim
extremists. It's Yahweh, the god of the
OT, the Xtion and Muslim god, they are
one in the same.

A Xtion will say, oh, they are making those
orders up, god would never tell them to do
those awful things. Why not, the OT is chock
full of Yahweh doing all kinds of awful things.

And if the Muslims are just making it all up,
it looks to an atheist that all of Yahweh's
followers are making it all up. Lack of evidence
in a gods existence certainly points in that
direction.

Because the definitions of the characteristics of God are not the same in each religion. Each religion believes that they are right.

The Oneness Pentecostal movement believes that that "trinity" is a perversion of scripture and that the Holy Spirit is all that there is.

That is pretty close to my position. Except I'm not big on the "turn the other cheek" part. There are times to stand up to evil forcefully.

Evenbob, it is important for you to understand that Judaism and Christianity share a common history and belief in God. However, while Muslims might claim to be a religion of Abraham and worship YHWH neither Christians or Jews I think would agree. For Christians the fullness of revelation happened in the person of Jesus Christ true God and true man. There is no further revelation needed or given so there are no further prophets and no other religious scriptures which would mean that Muhammad and the Quran are both not connected to Christianity.

As to your point about the OT you need to remember to read it in context of the time and also recognize what it was building up to, namely the person of Jesus Christ. Like a good teacher God slowly moves people in a violent time to recognize that there is a better way culminating in the sacrifice of Christ and the example of non-violence and the power of love.

Wiz, I too agree that there is always a time to stand up to evil and to protect the innocent and that is something that Christians have always understood. Turning the other cheek does not mean to become a milk toast. It is much harder in fact to stand your ground without falling into hatred or perpetuating more violence.

Wasn't it Yahweh, the Jewish god, that
impregnated Mary? Isn't Yahweh the
god Jesus talked about when he quoted
scripture? A huge part of the OT is used
in the Koran, and the god is Yahweh.
Jesus is obviously Yahweh born as a
man, if you believe that stuff.

Show me where Yahweh changed into
another god somewhere along the line.

"Christianity sprang from Judaism. Judaism and Islam share common roots. All three are known as "Abrahamic religions" because they trace their history to the covenant God made with Abraham in the Hebrew Bible."

The god of all three religions is Yahweh,
obviously. That Islam wants to call him
Allah is irrelevant. They all pray to the
same god, Yahweh is the god of the Jews,
the Xtions and the Muslims.

If you read about it, scholars of all three religions
dance holy religious jigs around this subject,
offering the flimsiest and often stupidest
reasons why it's not the same god at all.
But since god doesn't exist anyway, they're all
just kidding themselves. They pray to their egos,
and call it whatever they like. It all gets the same
result: No results at all.
