The Swiss franc has been abandoned to speculators. Their export business and tourist business may collapse as only the ultra wealthy will be able to visit. The TV watching license fee is now over $450 a year in US dollars.

They charge you to watch broadcast TV?
And people pay it?

Been the case in several places. The Brits have done it for years. The "Cat License" sketch on Monty Python where they talk about the "Cat Detector Van" is a spoof of the TV Detector Vans they use or used to use. Fail to pay and they will find you. If you are an expat I forget what they do but I think you get arrested as locals get what amounts to a traffic ticket but most expats would send an "up yours" card and go home without paying.

I never heard of such a thing, it's
appalling. The airwaves are free,
that's rather the point.

Free in the USA, not for the Brits.

I heard they have the same thing in the UK.

The airwaves are free, the TV's are licenced. it's how the BBC is funded and operated... no adverts, just the TV licence fee (about 200 quid a year, I believe).

EDIT : 145 pounds sterling.

Airwave licencing has been a thing for years and across the world. Transmitters pay to use part of the bandwidth everywhere. In this case the recievers are paying instead.

It's as ridiculous as charging for frequencies (there's no such thing as "airways").

But I believe this is a rather common practice in Europe. It was, or is, a common practice in Israel. I recall my aunt there telling me how people declared less sets than they owned, and for years hardly anyone admitted to owning a color set (can you imagine B&W TV???)

The zurich central bank will no longer have a cap on the exchange rate so the Swiss Franc rose and Turkish and Polish currencies fell. Many polish mortgages are denominated in Swiss Francs, after all who wants a Zloty?
