There have been no runways built in SE England since WWII. Last year the three main airports in the south-east—Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted, with four runways between them—handled more than 130m passengers, nearly 16m more than the main three serving New York, which have nine runways. Heathrow has been operating at more than 98% of its capacity since 2003. Gatwick, Britain’s second-busiest airport, is full 80% of the time. That results in congestion, which raises ticket prices and damages London’s reputation as a place to do business. The lack of runway capacity for flights to destinations such as Shenzhen or Wuhan will cost Britain £31 billion ($47 billion) in lost trade with the BRIC economies in the period it will take to build a new runway, according to the Confederation of British Industry.

It looks as if the first contract was let in Mexico City to begin site preparation for the airport.

With an increase in passengers of 8.6%, MEX was the fifth fastest growing of the top 50 airports in the world.

South Korea Seoul Incheon International Airport Incheon ICN/RKSI 45,662,322 Increase 9.6%
India Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport Mumbai, Maharashtra BOM/VABB 34,993,738 Increase 9.6%
China Shanghai Pudong International Airport Pudong, Shanghai PVG/ZSPD 51,651,800 Increase 9.5%
Brazil São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport São Paulo GRU/SBGR 39,773,716 Increase 9.2%
Mexico Benito Juárez International Airport Mexico City MEX/MMMX 34,255,739 Increase 8.6%

You will recall, I'm sure, the PRD and its allies closed off Reforma Avenue for weeks after Lopez Obrador lost in the presidential elections.

Obrador is being called the front runner in the presidential election, and he has vowed to kill the new airport. He has some vague plan about building two new runways at a military base 30 miles away and connecting them somehow to the current airport.

The idea of additional remote runways and keeping the current airport open is periodically discussed. Las Vegas is a good example.

Brown Field airport is about 12 miles from the current airport in San Diego and has been operating since 1918.

I'd bet a large sum if he gets elected, the new airport gets built more or less on schedule. Whatever there is in what passes for his mind, will be far more expensive than continuing the project to its conclusion.
