Ian McKellen (age 75) and Derek Jacobi (age 75) are possibly the best known openly gay men of their generation. Yet while TV seems to be trying very hard to portray non-stereotypical gay characters, they seem overjoyed in playing the flamboyant stereotype.

Do you think that Derek Jacobi, after playing the tortured Alan Turing (a gay man who lived his life in secret until committing suicide as a result of being forced to take a chemical castration drug by the police), enjoys playing a flamboyant gay character who lives his life openly.

The Gay men I've known love flaunting it.
In their own circles they act just like this,
I've seen it. The smarter they are, the more
they enjoy it.

I started watching the show because I wanted to give a chance, considering the actors.

I only lasted 10 minutes.

You have to love TV sitcoms, it is 100% in that vein. And you have to love bitch-slap humor, which doesnt do it for me.

Variety said that the material is as classy as your average Chuck Lorre show and is a pointed throwback to ’70s era schtick with decidedly un-P.C. humor and farcical plotlines that wouldn’t feel out of place in a “Three’s Company” rerun.

Ian McKellen is a great actor portraying a mediocre one. Between them they have a room full of acting awards.

They're both 75 and the money is easy and
good. Robin Williams took the series that
failed because he said it was close to home,
steady easy work, and a regular paycheck.
Movies were too much work and too sporadic
and emotionally draining, he said. I'm sure
these guys feel the same, they have nothing
to prove anymore.

Robin Williams was being paid $3.63 million to do the TV series The Crazy ones. That was a far cry from the up to $20 million he was being paid 15 years ago for a single film. He hadn't had a hit movie other than animated films in many years. I don't think voice actors are paid the huge money that live actors make.

In contrast, Ian McKellan is making probably close to $10 million per film in two different franchises. I think he enjoys doing this TV series.

That's what I said. Older actors like the steady
work and being close to home and getting
the steady paycheck. Alec Baldwin only did
all the seasons of 30 Rock for the residuals
he'll get the rest of his life. Like the Seinfeld
people, none have to work if they don't want
to.

I think it's funny, I LOL'd a few times. These
old pro's are good comic actors.

I just watched a 90 minute interview by the Screen
Actors Guild of Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart.
It was wonderful. I wish it was an hour longer.
The history these two extremely talented actors
have is a treat to listen to. They are both so witty
and so at ease, I was enthralled. At the end, the
host said he's been doing this for 25 years and
this was the best, most magical interview he's
ever done. I'll see it again for sure.

That Frances de la Tour was pretty much of a knock-out half a century ago.
