Today is Nunavut Day. I must admit I didn't even know about it until 6 PM today and didn't make any arrangements to celebrate, but the evening is still young.

For those geographically challenged, Nunavut is a territory in northern Canada that split off from the Northwest Territories about ten years ago. Nunavut license plates are difficult to obtain due to the low population there. Here is an example of an Ebay auction, where a simple car plate is going for $179.

I met a family from Nunavut once. Like most residents of Nunavut, they were native to it. The mother mentioned to me that in their native language there were no words for the reproductive parts of the body. Due to this, it was difficult to have conversations about safe sex and STDs. So she was trying to introduce terminology to the language for such discussion but the effort was controversial.

Why not contact somebody who has a car
there and offer twice what a new plate
would cost him for his present plate.
He can tell them it got lost and buy another.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

Because he could get more than that by putting it on eBay.

I thought of that. He's taking a big risk of
getting caught doing that. It's illegal
everywhere to sell plates that are
registered. Even if he blurred the
numbers he could still get caught.
Selling it privately out of the country
is safe.

If Nevada is 26 acres per person, and Newfoundland and Labrador is 180 acres per person, Nunavit is 14,500 acres per person. You are talking about roughly 10 homes with only 1/4 of the people speaking English as their mother tongue.

Listen to this singing native to Nunavit.

These people are not sitting around on the internet waiting to put a license plate into a mailbox.
