Don't play this video unless you want to see a dead sperm whale explode!

Historical fact. At one point this buildup in methane gas in the corpse of a dead whale was how they were hunted. Only some species of whale (commonly called "right whales") had so much blubber that they would float after being killed allowing the whalers to retrieve the body.

Most whales sank. Whalers would gather in a field of boats and kill all the whales. They would then wait for two or three days until the bodies were so filled with methane gas that they would briefly pop back up the surface. The boat that retrieved the body would have the catch, as it was impossible to know who killed it. Needless to say this process was inherently inefficient, and probably only one in three whales killed were ever retrieved for oil. Most of them popped up out of reach, and sank permanently before they could be pulled into a boat.

Industrial techniques developed in the late 19th century allowed the whales to be killed and winched to the boat without such a huge waste of energy,
